Guest guest
Here is a link to the Vitamin E Factsheet put out by the National Institute of Health. http//ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamine.asp (Sorry I don't know how to hyperlink it) In summary, these are the upper limits (UL) for Vitamin E supplementation/day that they recommend as safe. This would be from all sources. Children 1-3 300 IU (or 200 mg)/day Children 4-8 450 IU (or 300 mg)/day Children 9-13 900 IU/day Children 14-18 1200 IU/day Adults 19-70 1500 IU/day Obviously, in case of a deficiency or malabsorption problem, you would give more. (Max's Mom, suspected oral/verbal apraxia) > > After reading the messages on Vitamin E, I was very excited and rushed > to the Health Food Store to get some for my son. Guest guest
There is very little info out there on vit E supplementation in children. Which employees? Of the health food store? Like the same employees who told me kamut and smelt did not contain gluten? What kind of background do they have? They don't really know. I have spoken to several of the world vitamin E experts, who have reassured me that the doses (even the higher doses that I) am using, are safe. There is nothing to be worried about using 400 IU dose. Really. Especially since it seems that at least some of our kids need these higher doses to have more normal neuro development. Look in J Stordy's book: the LCP solution: A nutritional treatment for dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. She is a PhD nutrtionalist. There is a few pages on vitamin E. She says up to 66 IU a pound (so like 3000 IU a day are OK for a 3 year old). I haven't seen that high a dose listed anywhere else, but even at high doses, vitamin E is safe, and very few complications have ever been reported. As I mentioned in a previous post, it can effect vitamin K and an increased risk of bleeding. Again that is at very high dose, and not 400 IU. The treatment dose for vitamin E deficient neurological problems is as high as 100-150mg/kg per day. We need to somehow figure out if our kids really have an underlying vitamin E deficiency as a cause for their problems. All of ph's apraxic problems have been significantly improved on vitamin E, from speech and coordination to now normal strength and tone (had low tone and right sided weakness)...plus a resolution of all the SID symptoms, and is now normally processing pain (but the pain thing only came on higher doses). This is a critical question to answer, and the reason I am now looking for funding for a study. Neurological complications of a vitamin E deficiency become irreversible with time. So for our kids, time is actually ticking away. At 2 and 3, we can probably reverse alot of this...but after a decade or 2, I'm not sure how much can be fixed...although its worth trying and supplementing will prevent further decline if low vit E in the nervous system is contributing. I hope this is somewhat helpful. We are in totally uncharted waters with our apraxic children and the effects of vitamin E. But again, 400 IU is totally safe. I am sure that whoever you asked for information...really doesn't know. I have tracted down those who have written the text on vit E...so those who have spent a lifetime thinking about and studying its interactions. There are very few people out there who have done this...so I am sure that whoever gave you information was talking without knowing all the facts. - > After reading the messages on Vitamin E, I was very excited and rushed > to the Health Food Store to get some for my son. Guest guest
Thanks a lot for the reply. The store was Chuck's Healthfood Store in , FL, and the employee was a female, she was actually very loud and would not listen to me when I tried to explain that this was not a normal child... I will shouw my husband the links you provided. Thanks again! I also wanted to mention that I have added the ProEpa to my son's diet and seen results. > > > > > > After reading the messages on Vitamin E, I was very excited and > > rushed > > > to the Health Food Store to get some for my son. Guest guest
In giving the 400 IU of vitamin E a day, the brand we use requires using two capsules per day. We have been giving one in the morning and one in the evening. Has anyone found that it makes a difference whether the dosage is spread out in this way, or is it better to give the vitamin E all at once, especially in this initial dosage that we just started a few day ago. Also, I would love to hear a lot more brand names of the Vitamin E that everyone is using. , you had written that you were going back to your original brand and dosage. What is that brand, please. And my goodness, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so very much for all your wonderful help. Sorry to say we have not seen any great surges like some of you are so miraculously reporting. We are absolutely thrilled for you and long for the same results with our child. We are seeing small advances and are holding our breath........ Thanks for your help. Guest guest
, thank you so very much for your help. You had earlier said that along with the 400 IU of E should be given 200 to 300 mg of gamma E. I got the impression that this is because there should be some sort of balance of the two and that it is important that the gamma be given along with the E alpha d-tocopherol. And I understand, as you said, that there isn't the experience here, as there is with the omegas. , and some others, have posted that they are using the VitaminWorld 200 IU E and 200 mg Gamma E which is sold as " High Gamma Tocopherol. " Some others say that they are using brands of 400 IU E that contain only 60 or 70 mg of the Gamma E. So this would be 70 mg of gamma that these people are using, and yet others, like , are givng 400 mg of Gamma with the 400 IU E. That is quite a disparity, but since both groups are reporting good results, I am wondering if it matters that much. Maybe it matters physiologically, or neurologically, in the long run. I can purchase either kind, but like every other parent here I want to do the best that I can for my child. I had gotten the impression that the greater amounts of gamma should definitely be included along with the 400 IU E. You, of course, have delved so deeply into this before giving the E to your own sons, and based on your expertise and on what you said, I would tend toward the 200 to 300 Gamma E, or even to the 400 mg Gamma E like gives. I was just concerned about the best proportion of gamma E to the E alpha d-tocopherol. When given with 400 IU of the E, are 60 or 70 mg of gamma too little? Are 400 mg of gamma too much? I've been worried that I would be giving my son too much or too little gamma. Thank heaven for you and for your Vitamin E experts that have been so wonderful to share this information that people like me would otherwise probably not even be able to access. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It is absolutely a thrill to read of ph's progress as well as the progress the other children are making. Every additional sound, each new word or phrase or accomplishment is an absolute joy and is a constant source of hope. Thank you, everyone, for sharing your triumphs, both small and large. I hope to be able to add ours one day. And again, thank you so much, . Suzanne [ ] Re: SAFETY OF VITAM E - HEL I am using Nature Made E (from Long's drug) 400 IU alpha d-tocophorol and Gamma E 300 by Jarrow We are using Unique E for my allergic older son, and this is what I switched ph to and saw some mild regression (although I did decrease the dose by 100 IU of alpha tocophorol in this switch). Surprising that such a low amount would make a difference given the high doses my son is on. Dividing up the 400IU dose into 2 200 IU doses is fine, yet you may need a higher dose at once. It may be easier to get a 400 IU brand and just give one, unless you found a combo alpha and gamma like is using. No one knows at this point what dose is best. We don't even have the experience like with the omegas and hundreds of reports to base decisions on. We saw improvements even with a small increase (the vit E in the capsule vs the liquid) - which was only an increase of 30 IU given 3 times a day. But that change was not obvious overnight. It was over the course of 8-10 days that we realized that ph was doing so well, until he starte to regress again and I realize we were inadvertently giving him extra vit E with the capsules. The " oh my God " response came with an addition of 400 IU all at once, and then even more so when I have 400 IU twice a day, and then added gamma. We have also been supplementing with omega 3 for nearly a year when we added the vitamin E. So we had already experienced amazing surges on the omega supplements. We had a lot room for improvement given the advances/surges with high dose omega 3 than if we were just starting off the bat. It may be that folks giving omega 3 supplements will see dramatic results. However for those new to the supplementation, it makes sense that it will take more time. But I would expect that if your child will be an omega 3/vit E responder - that it will become obvious in less than 1 month. However, and can tell you better - I know there are those whose improvement took longer, although I suspect it is because higher dose omegas were needed to replace the deficiency that had developed over time...perhaps in some kids the result of a vit E deficiency. Just my stream of consciousness. -claudia ------------ --------- --------- -- > In giving the 400 IU of vitamin E a day, the brand we use requires using two capsules per day. Guest guest
NOthing like living through this to know exactly how exciting every sound was - before the words came. Even now, when I feel like we have left the " world of apraxia " - despite small residual motor planning issues. Really - they are minor. I didn't think a story like ours was possible - and even more unlikely - that it would be my child who resolved. I still remember reading " the late talker " ...and thinking, yeah right...fish oil...wouldn't it be nice if he JUST STARTED TALKING with a little fish oil. And so he did. Vitamin E has brought it to a whole new level. Re: Gamma - I would go with the higher dose, since alpha supplements can cause a gamma deficiency, and the gamma is an important anti- inflammatory. I think it will be more important to those allergic kids with asthma and food allergies, based on what I've read. But create an imbalance doesn't sound ideal either, even though the role of gamma is just recently being discovered/investigated. We are giving 600 mg of gamma, to give you an ideal. But I don't think folks should be giving more than 400 IU and 200-300 mg gamma twice a day until more info is available. There are some vitamin E folks that don't think gamma is at all important and that it is immediated metabolized and goes into the urine. If that is the case, you are spending $ on a supplement that is just being excreted out of the system. But based on several lectures I attended, I was impressed by the NIH data on gamma, and do think it will end up being important. How this all plays out in apraxia remains to be seen and needs to be studied. If anyone knows any foundations or donors...looking for a good cause, I have a team of MDs and PhDs who are all ready to study this in a clinical trial. I'm just looking for funding. The NIH route takes years. Hoping for more information in a shorter amount of time. - > , thank you so very much for your help. I was just concerned about the best proportion of gamma E to the E alpha d- tocopherol. > > Suzanne
Guest guest
Hi , Thank you again for wonderful information. And of course, I have another question. The questions are endless, it seems. In another posting you had suggested that the child be given the " other " Vitamin E that the mother had purchased in the am and the natural Vitamin E in the pm. I know that some medications work better depending on the time of day they are given. I wonder if this is true for the EFA's and Vitamin E. It seems, from the postings, that a lot of the parents are giving the EFA's and Vitamin E all at the same time, in the am. Have you determined if there is a better time or a better combination for giving one or the other? At this point, we are giving one ProEFA and two softgels to equal 400 IU E with 300 mg gamma included, per day. Is it better to give this in the am or in the pm or one at one time and one at another? Since you had mentioned giving that natural Vitamin E in the pm it made me wonder if pm is the better time of day for that. It sounds like I am being picky, picky, picky. But I guess when, like you said, you read " The Late Talker " and thought yeah, right, fish oil--and lo and behold your child did talk. Then you came across the Vitamin E and what a wonderful " cure, " as you said, using both turned out to be for your son. And reading all these other postings of wonderful strides the children have made, it seems like any little thing could make a difference. It gives you the hope that there are a whole lot more miracles out there just waiting to happen. I could trial-and-error this am/pm dosing thing, but I am sure you already have thoughts pertinent to this. Again, I am truly grateful. Guest guest
Re: Time of day... I don't know if there is a time of day that is better. Not sure it makes a difference. You just want to give it with a meal, since for ideal absorption you need to have food triggering release of enzymes/bile etc to get the maximum benefit. As far as I know now, you want at least 400 IU alpha d tocophorol, probably even 800 IU (so 400 IU twice a day), plus some gamma (200- 300mg). However it comes, it shouldn't matter. I have just found it easier to buy an alpha tocophorol (from longs drug), and add a separate gamma. But the brands that have a mix are fine too. The key to getting a real clinical study going is that if there is some vitamine E deficiency ( or transport problem - which creates a greater need for higher than normal vit E levels and increases the daily requirement for your particular child...even higher doses are needed, and even 800 IU a day is not enough. You would not necessarily want to give such high doses to an individual who does not have this problem...just like you wouldn't want to give insulin to a non-diabetic. Fortunately vitamin E is very safe, and from everything and everyone I've talked to, as long as you are under 1000mg of alpha (or 1500 IU) a day, you are fine and this is safe. So until we have more information, I would really discourage people using higher than 800 IU a day alpha tocophorol at this point...just because we don't know long-term if there are any adverse effects. But this dose is safe. - > Hi , > > Thank you again for wonderful information. And of course, I have another question.
