Guest guest
Hi fellow smiley necks. I asked my oncologist about my sore, bloody-metallic tasting tongue with scalloped edges. He didn't know what caused it and said if was related to the RAI, it was a rare side effect. So today I visited my chiropractic-naturopath and showed him my lavendar coated, sore, scalloped tongue. He said that the weird tongue (which started hurting a few days post RAI and is getting worse, not better) and the boils all over the backs of my ears are because of my body detoxing itself from heavy metals post RAI. He told me to rinse my mouth with some water and a couple drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide daily. This would both keep bacteria from growing in the little sores along my tongue and speed up the detox. So I'm trying it. I thought those of you who are open to alternative options would want to know. -Kelley
Guest guest
Hi Kelley, Did you have a sense while you were hypo that your tongue felt swollen? This can be a side effect for a hypothyroid patient. Having the RAI just compounds the issues. I clearly remember having a sore tongue for quite sometime post RAI. the metalic taste is common, all symptoms leave after awhile. I think you are most likely to see improvement as your TSH falls to a suppressive level of <0.10. Guest guest
Biotene is your friend. It is an over the counter (but you may have to ask for it or have the pharmacist order it for you) mouthwash that works wonders. Very gentle and it helped to relieve many of my tongue-related and throat-related symptoms. The best $7 I have spent recently. Also drink a lot of water (I know " a lot " is vague, but I made an effort to drink several 16 oz bottles a day and it helped) and minimize caffeine, alcohol, etc). A third thing is to get some lemonhead candies. I don't know why it works, but it does. It is soothing and helps the saliva flow. Another cheap, drug-free aid. A search on this newsgroup will reveal a lot of info on this. It helped me a great deal - I am mainly repeated what I heard here first and tried and it worked. Also may want to see your dentist for preventatives (extra strong toothpaste and gel). Ed > > Hi fellow smiley necks. My dentist calls the spots on my tongue 'geographic tongue', and even showed it to me in his dental text book. He says it is harmless, even though it gets sore. My pharmicist (sp) recommended Biotene mouth wash, and it helps a lot to 'calm' the spots. It is alcohol=free, 'cleans and refreshes without burning'. Give it a try! Guest guest
I'll look for it. Thanks. Maybe I can use it more often along with the hydrogen peroxide. -Kelley tongue problems > my lavendar coated, sore, scalloped tongue. Guest guest
The Iodine 131. And everyone detoxes as the I-131 is removed from the body. I just happen to be doing it through my mouth and ears and am showing some sensitivity to it. -Kelley tongue problems > ... Guest guest
Thanks Ed. I'll look for it. I ate so many lemonheads in isolation that the very thought of them turns my stomach. -Kelley Re: tongue problems Biotene is your friend. I was thinking more of lead poisoning & suchlike. I thought you meant the I131 detoxed you of other bad stuff (like what? if that is what you meant). I never thought of I131 as " nuclear waste " either, until I saw it here! Thanks, . And I guess I don't think of excretion of medical-treatment-substance as " detox " either. Somehow " detox " connotes " bad stuff got in " to me that shouldn't have (or I shouldn't have taken). bj

Hi, Kelley - You may want to educate your oncologist that this is by NO means a rare side effect, as witnessed by all the responses you've gotten (not to mention that there was ample material for a compilation of solutions - #33937 & other letters linked in #42592) Please let us know what works best for you good luck - NYC
Guest guest
---Hey all: It's interesting that for years prior to my dx of thyca, I have had what I call crater tongue. It would just pop up and looked ugly and also hurt if I ate anything that was acidic. When this would happen I would lay low on the vinigar I love to use on salads and make sure I brushed my tongue. It really is a benign condition (thank god) but bothersome.
