Guest guest
I too have thought a lot about the how, when, and why in medical terms. I think that if anyone looks at their family history, whether extended or immediate, they will find cancer, substance abuse, immunological disorder, allergies, asthma, heart conditions, learning disability, mental health conditions, and even autism or other neuroligical conditions. I do believe that there must be a reason it is more prevalent in one family than in another living in the same atmosphere and exposed to the same level of " toxins " . My 27 month old son is severely verbally and orally apraxic, has asthma, is always sick from mid August through Fabruary, has food/environmental allergies and intolerances, has recurring bouts of eczema and is highly likely on the Autism Spectrum (probably PDD- NOS). My 4 year old daughter has Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Auditory Processing issues, extreme emotional responses, chronic constipation, food/enviromental allergies and intolerances and is sick from mid august through February. I myself have ADD, Depression, Auditory Processing Issues, high eosinophils, extreme enviromental allergies, food allergies, and an Eating Disorder. My husband has ADD and food/enviro allergies. My sister has 4 kids and they ALL have food allergies enviro allergies, one has ADHD and Aspergers, and two have sensory and auditory issues and were late talkers. My brother has 2 kids with food and enviro allergies and their youngest (2 yr old) has Apraxia and is on the Autism Spectrum. My othe bro has 2 kids and they both have food/enviro allergies and one has ADHD. There is a vast history of cancer, mental health issues, and substance abuse on all sides of my family and my husband family. I believe that genetics do play a large role in all of it. But I don't think anyone will ever be able to look at me and say " we figured it out...the reason Sammy is Apraxic and Autistic is________ " . It does intrigue me that my 27 month old son and my 24 month old nephew are both severely apraxic and have PDD- NOS and neither have receptive language issues. They are 3 mo. apart and live in very different households. I wish there were precise answers to all the whats, hows, and whys but there's not right now and may never be so I try to focus on what we do actually know. I'm sorry this is so long, but your post peaked my interest and I guess typing out my response helped me get some thoughts in order. > > Hi All, > > I've been thinking more and more lately about genetics and what that > means for health and of course apraxia. Guest guest
" My first question for all of you is: Do your families have worse-than- average histories of Cancer? Althzeimers? Heart conditions? Allergies and asthma? Mental illness? Apraxia or Autism? Anything else you can think of? " Hi Kerri! I believe that there may be some validity in your post, but actually, the answer to your questions above (all of them) when it comes to my family or my husband's is a resounding " NO. " 's apraxia seemed to come out of nowhere. We do not even live in an area with a lot of apraxia, or with a more than usual amount of other neurological disorders, as far as I can tell. While I do inwardly continue to wonder and speculate, I don't really think that I will find the answers anytime soon. In the meantime, I worry a lot about my younger daughter , especially since the etiology of 's apraxia is pretty unknown (but it is not believed to be genetic). So far, so good ... we are keeping our fingers crossed. My Ramblings and Questions... Hi All, I've been thinking more and more lately about genetics and what that means for health and of course apraxia. I am a believer in the toxic theory...that our kids were or are still being overloaded with both environmental and vaccine toxins, which by some process (be it straight up mercury poisoning or via a depressed immune system) are causing the apraxia. I believe that our genetics determine what kind of toxic load our bodies can handle - some of us have no problem getting the stuff out but others can't excrete the poisons and they just build and build in the body. The problem with believing my theory is that I'm basically saying that without some serious lifetime support, most in my family may be bound to develop cancers and other life-threatening illnesses. My first question for all of you is: Do your families have worse-than- average histories of Cancer? Althzeimers? Heart conditions? Allergies and asthma? Mental illness? Apraxia or Autism? Anything else you can think of? My mother's side of the family is relatively healthy. Just some skin cancer, lots of allergies and some asthma, but a high incidence of autism. My father's side is a completely different story (though to be fair they lived in a way different environment - dirt poor in Pawtucket RI). Two of my aunts got cancer before age 50 (and quickly died), there's lots of mental illness including a suicide, rampant substance abuse and depression, OCD, borderline personality disorder, and even several cases of schizophrenia (really I can't think of a single family member who doesn't have some sort of mental illness). My father died just this year (at 52) of a massive heart attack (even though he was in great shape, lived a very healthy lifestyle, and had great cholesterol and blood pressure) and I hear there were a few other men in the family who died the same way. There is a history of learning disabilities too, oh and allergies and asthma. I have allergies, asthma, and an eating disorder and have battled with depression a few times. My husband's family is generally super healthy (they live into their 90s, these people don't even have allergies - can you believe it?), except for 1 case of cancer and one of heart disease. I'd like to do some genetics testing to figure out what is going on. Do we have an interruption in the methylation cycle that's causing toxic build-up in our bodies? Is there something specific we need to supplement that will help our bodies function effectively? I'd like to do something like Dr. Yasko's genetic profile. Does anyone know if there's something similar out there that's not so expensive? I really want to be as proactive as possible about the health of my family, but I want to make sure that the things I do are justified and hopefully exactly what we need. Guest guest
Kerri, It seems that a lot of families with a child with ASD have many members with auto-immune diseases. That's what we have in our family histories: auto-immune thyroid disease, asthma, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever. I wonder if families with a child with " just " apraxia have a lot of auto-immune disease too. I've always suspected that my older child (not the one who was diagnosed with apraxia) has PANDAS. Guest guest
Thanks , , and for your replies! So far you've each had very different family histories... After going back and reading what I wrote about my father's family, it really is astounding to me that I cannot think of a single person in his family who doesn't have some real health problems. It does seem to me that at least this leg of the family is genetically susceptible to illness. I welcome any other replies too, either on the site or privately.
