Guest guest
Was wondering how many of you use 2 spaces after periods (end of sentences). Probably most of us old timers. I know when I started with this company prior to MedQuist they accepted either way as long as we standardized throughout the report. I am a 2 spacer and can't get used to looking at a sentence with only one space. How about you all? Sharon T --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
I use 2 also. I hope I don't have to go to only using 1 space. Guest guest
I'm a two spacer myself and an old timer with typing anyway. In my course though they required us to use just one space at the end of a sentence. It was very hard to adjust to doing it that way after so many years of doing it the other way. Guest guest
Sharon, as you might imagine, this spacing quandary has become a big issue in the classroom. What to teach? Interestingly enough, the first software that came through with the directive to " space once after a period " in anything other than material to be published (in, say, PageMaker) was Microsoft Word, so there's one more thing to be angry at Bill Gates about. I have decided to take classwork spaced either way and to teach students how to meet the needs of their employer, whatever those needs might be. If you are a one-spacer working under one-spacer conditions or a two-spacer working under two-spacer conditions, you're in good shape. Otherwise, create an auto-correct entry to accommodate your spacing habit and the employer's spacing requirement. Thus, I (a two-spacer) might create an auto-correct entry that will take a period and two spaces (. ) and turn it into a period and one space (. ). Then my fingers are happy and my employer is happy. To me, this is a worse, and less defensible, change in formatting than the English teachers decreeing, after I spent 35 years perfecting my ability to include footnotes in a research document and then getting software that did them automatically, that annotated references and not footnotes are the way to attribute documentation. Guest guest
The DOS software we use based on Word Perfect, I don't know of a correction for too many spaces between words or after periods. Perhaps others no away around this. I know in Word it will since if you have too many spaces between words with colored lines but my work software is in the dark ages. Sharon T. Guest guest
One account 2 spaces -- another account 1 space. I just change my Instant Text settings with each account. Neither pays by the line, BTW. One pays by word and the other by dictated minute. Rennie Spacing at end of sentence Was wondering how many of you use 2 spaces after periods (end of sentences). Guest guest
You'd probably have to have a macro for it in WP DOS. Guest guest
I believe I'd make a macro that would find all instances of a period followed by two spaces and replace them with a period and one space. Or just do a global search and replace on each document. It's been a while since I used WP 5.1, and that's to the best of my recollection at this point in time. lol P. S. I do a lot of work in HTML these days, and you wouldn't believe what a bear it is to get a second (or succeeding) space to show in an HTML document published on the Internet. One must put in the HTML code for each space ( & nbsp;). Guest guest
I, too, learned to type years ago when 2 spaces was the norm, but as I traded in my typewriter for a computer, I learned that with proportional spacing, 2 spaces were no longer required and I made the switch to 1. When I first began at TeM, I had 2 accounts; one required a single space after periods, and the other (you guessed it!) wanted 2. I was afraid I would have a terrible time switching back and forth, but it was surpisingly easy. Interestingly, my new account doesn't care as long as we are consistent. --------------------------------- a in Maine BA English Career Step Grad Total eMed - 8/19/02 ' Spacing at end of sentence > Was wondering how many of you use 2 spaces after periods (end of sentences). > Probably most of us old timers. Guest guest
I try VERY hard to do just the one space I'm supposed to be using but sometimes another one will sneak out. I agree that it is very difficult to get used to looking at one space when proofreading and know that it is correct. Getting used to typing one space is much easier, I find. Guest guest
One of those old timer 2-spacers here. Fortunately, both services I work with prefer the same. If I'm required to use 1 I use autocorrect and go merrily along with my old habits. Guest guest
Either way, two spaces or one, is easy with Word Perfect keyboard change or Word Autotext. It saves so much time. > >Reply-To: NMTC >To: " NMTC " <NMTC > >Subject: Spacing at end of sentence >Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 17:04:32 -0500 > >Was wondering how many of you use 2 spaces after periods (end of >sentences). >Probably most of us old timers.
