Guest guest
Hi So you won't be doing PD after all, but instead going on hemodialysis if necessary until you can get the transplant surgery? This is pretty big news! I almost missed it. If so, this is a different situation than someone who is starting hemodialysis and going on the waiting list. Such a person could be waiting years, but in your case it's different. Hemodialysis via a catheter is adequate if it's just temporary. The problem, besides the inconvenience and the risk of more frequent infection, is that you can't get a high enough blood flow with a catheter to provide adequate dialysis when doing it 3 times per week, and sometimes it's necessary to extend the treatment time. Less blood flow in the same, fixed amount of time means less removal of toxins and phosphorus. Phosphorus especially is difficult to remove. It takes a long treatment time, and regular 3 times per week hemo is simply not enough. But it should be fine for only a few weeks or even a few months. I wouldn't worry about it if it's only for a short time. Still, I'm hoping you won't need it at all before they can schedule the transplant.
