Hi Tessa,

Unless your disease is signifigantly advanced, there really isn't much to do.

Keeping an eye on sodium is useful in a common sense kind of way - as is eating

a healthy diet. Once you get a handle on blood pressure (as Walt indicated,

that can take a bit - my son's neph slowly tweaked the doses in tiny increments

over a period of 3-4 months until we arrived at something that was effective),

you may find you can ease up on that a bit. Watch for making huge changes in

diet while they are tweaking your meds.

Blade's neph put him on Lysinopril and a low sodium diet. He hasn't

had a problem with high BP so far so both things dropped his BP WAY

low (85/49) He lowered his dose from 5mg to 2.5mg and told Blade he

can eat whatever he wanted.... Is watching the salt purely for BP

purposes?

I think that is just a good overall recommendation, watching your sodium. We

tend to eat way too much sodium if the recommended amount is 2400mg/day for a

full size active adult male, since you can eat that at breakfast.

Hi Kristi,

Based on Blade's kidney function being so good, he most likely does not need

to follow any dietary restrictions. Other than low sodium (which is good

for everyone, not just kidney patients) and sometimes low protein, usually

there are no restrictions required until you get to 30% function or below.

Even

then, any renal diet needs to be in response to your (or Blade's in this

case) individual lab results.
