I just use a line counting program (I'm an IC) that counts bolds, underlines,

caps, and anything else that takes a keystroke to create. (I use Abacus and

LOVE it.)

I am trying to make a list of the things I want to ask prospective

employers if offered a job and would love some help. Since I have

been working for the clinic as an employee I feel sort of lost when

it comes to working for a company as an at-home MT. I have the

basics covered regarding benefits, how and when paid, etc., but what

are some things I may be forgetting or overlooking? What are some

questions you wish you had asked your employer before you started

working for them?

Your help is VERY much appreciated,

TIA!

I don't know what your priorities are, but a couple of VERY important

questions for me are:

1. Is there almost always enough work to go around?

2. Are benefits tied to performance? In other words, if I don't make my

minimum line count one day, or one pay period, will you take away my health

insurance?

I know that is standard, but I have seen several companies that don't

pay for spaces. My feeling is that if they don't pay for spaces

A key stroke is a key stroke is a key stroke. I think bolding and

underlining should count, as well. Because I do a lot of bolding and

underlining, I base my line on 60 characters with spaces.

As I mentioned in Margaret's email, my computer has been down. I am trying

to scurry through all the email I collected. Your's range a bell as one of

the Advance articles this month had a list of questions for MTs to ask

prospective employers. This is a free magazine and all should be getting

it. They have a site on line but I am not sure all the articles appear

both on line and in print. Do you have a fax available? I might be able to

fax it to you. Or, if possible, I am not sure it will come out clean, I

could fax it to me then email it to me and then forward it to you....faxing

might work better. Actually, I am not sure if it can be reprinted? Anyone

know the copyright laws on a free magazine?

Well, are you interviewing as an independent or as an employee. If

independent, I would tell them what I charge and how my rates are

computed... I would not ask.

These were two of the many questions in Advance.

Sherry,

I compiled a list of questions on my web site. Feel free to cut and

paste it and modify it to your heart's content!

One thing I did that really helped me was to ask the Doctor what she

paid her previous MT. She readily shared " $10/hour " and I about

choked! LOL! I wouldn't take an IC job for even double that--it just

doesn't pay with picking up tapes, printing, etc. But, I didn't say

that, of course :-). Instead, I told her that I charged by the line

and that I felt confident she'd be quite pleased with my rate (I'm

always the optimist, can you tell?!! LOL!). I also told her that

after one month we could re-evaluate and if she felt my pricing was

way out of line we could make an adjustment. After a month she was

totally thrilled and SAVING money with me because I'm fast. I suspect

the $10/hour woman was doing " typing in her spare time! " Ugh! So, it

probably took her 5 to 6 hours to do what I can usually get done in 2

hours or so. Plus, the previous MT would take weeks to get the tapes

done. Mine are done within 24 hours. My doc is happy as can be.

Just thought I'd share that experience so that people will know not to

get discouraged if the doc gives you some low rate that they're ready

to pay.....

Alice: Thanks so much for the offer of the Advance article. It

arrived the day after I posted that question. LOL
