I had already decided that working from home really wasn't going to be one of

my options around here. Did you ever find anything at ALL <in-house or from

home> around Waycross?

And Sherry... maybe they'll realize your worth and want to keep you on in the

same capacity they have you now. If not, maybe you'll find something better.

Since you have five years experience, have you tested with any of the

nationals?

great job at a multispecialty clinic in the area. I am a full-time,

at-home employee for the clinic and LOVE the job. However, last

home MTs " , that he " does not like them " and that I had to move into

Of course, that scares the you-know-what out of me!!! I have had this

comfy, secure, well-paying job for the last four years and my comfort

level meter is pegged out....it's a dream job in a lot of ways, but I

I feel for you. I get pulled into 2 directions. I like the pay for in-house,

but not the office politics. I place I used to work decided to outsource

offshore -- I was not there when they decided to do this. I have a friend in

the office and was trying to go back just because of the benefits -- for editing

-- but this office is in such turmoil with talks of mergers, etc. that I have

opted another route.

Hi Sherry,

The only advice I can give from my limited (8th month) experience would be

to let the office know that if you have to choose between working in the

office and working for someone else, they will lose you (after you do a

little pavement-pounding to see if you even have options. That will at least

give them the chance to reconsider, and open up discussion on why at-home is

so terrible. If you are paid hourly, maybe suggest per-line pay based on

local standards, so they know they are getting exactly what they are paying

for. Hopefully they will value your experience enough to consider letting

you continue working at home as opposed to having to train somebody new.

I remember when I lived in GA and was going to school, being disheartened to

learn that transcribing from home was uncommon in that area (Waycross). Best

I pretty much told them I probably won't be staying....the new CEO

tends to get his way no matter what and so his preference outweighs

my value. It's really quite sad because I am one of the top two

producers and they are extremely happy with my work, so it's their

loss, ya know?

and a test tape is on the way as we speak.

I just sent out my first resume this morning and had a call about an

hour later...I'm trying to keep my current job's workload up while

looking for a job on the sly, so the majority will probably be online

this weekend.

Hi Sheila,

No, but I didn't really look actively while in the South. I got my schooling

at OTI (now OTC, and yes, the 'O' stands for Okefenokee) and then moved

West, where it seems almost all the MTs work from home. My instructor said

the going rate down there was .07 per line, and that one would have to work

in-house for at least a few years before they would consider allowing

working from home.

They did when I was there, and it was paid for almost entirely by the HOPE

scholarship. They were sending out questionairres about online classes about

the time I left, as in, if offerred, would you? I said yes. The actual

transcription classes left a little bit to be desired, a little behind the

times, but were a good enough start that I could supplement and get a BOS

and do just fine.

There are also a bunch of clinics around here that I want to apply to. It would

be great if I could get hired on to just do one specialty like x-ray or

No matter job you end up taking, I'd encourage you to leave on very

good terms with your current employer. I'd also be sure to let them

know that if they ever change their mind to let you work at home, you

would love to hear from them. You never know what will happen down

the road, nor how long the new CEO will last :-).

road on this one by giving a proper notice, etc. Rumor is that the

new CEO is planning to do away with the department altogether because

it costs the clinic so much and the latest grapevine tidbit is that

he is looking at outsourcing to India (where he is from).

I am just north of Columbus, about an hour and a half south of

Atlanta.

I was asked by one of my accounts if I would consider working in office. I

said no way! I told them that I work at home because I hate office politics

and I can get twice as much work done in the same amount of time with no

office interference and the ability to work anytime in a 24-hour period.

They have never brought it up again, and that was 5 years ago.

You just summed up in a nutshell why I do not want to work in the

office. The other factors going into this decision are my military

husband and a son who is a senior in high school that also has SEVERE

ADHD and Opp. Defiant Disorder. I hate to sound like a whiner, but

between DH calling me to say, " I have to go TDY tonight " and DS's

school calling me AT LEAST twice a week, there is no way I could be

as productive in an office as I am at home. When DH deployed to the

Middle East after Sept 11 and then again to Iraq I was able to be at

home, be available for my son and be the kind of mom I want to be and

I just don't see being able to do that while holding down an office

job and then having to come home to another extremely full time

(overtime) job. Not to mention, scrubs might be comfortable office

attire, but jammies and bare feet rule!

I suspect we all enjoy working in the comfort of our loose, comfy clothes.

I'm a night owl, and it works out very well for me, also, to work at home

since I have two teenagers still at home and I want to be available for them.

They'll be gone all too soon.

I've enjoyed reading your many e-mails since I've been hooked up to your

group.

I'm learning a lot just by scanning them.

I have been in your situation, I will never forget one ortho group I worked for.

They built a brand-new building and put in a lot of amenities. The other

transcriptionist and I were called into a meeting at 3:30 p.m. to be told that

we were no longer needed and we would be paid through the end of the day (5

p.m.). That was " so generous of them. " This doc later fired his brother who

was the founding physician of the group. I will never forget that.

I better get to work as I have to get to the PT in a few hours for probably less

than 1 hour's worth of work. I had everything caught up on Tuesday and the doc

has been on his 3-day outreach which I do not type. He will only have been in

the office for this morning to see patients. So I might have a total of 10

minutes of dictation to transcribe. He is so routine that if I have typed on

the patient before I just call up the previous dictation, change the dates and a

few things in the body and then I'm done with it. Very, Very easy work. Am

paid by the hour so that is why I want to maintain this partnership.

I have rattled on too long. I will be hitting the work station now.
