Guest guest
You want to start out with at least 400 IU. It is harmless. Most people (MDs or pharmacists) will have no clue. Our kids are different. The fact that there is a response to vit E suggests there is something deficient. But 400 IU is totally safe. Up to 1000 grams is totally safe according to vitamin E experts I have been talking to. I have done a great deal of research before putting my child on this. We are on higher doses than I would feel comfortable suggesting anyone try. But at the same time, we cut about 200IU a day (because we switched to a alpha/gamma combo) - and we have lost intelligibility. I started noticing in into the second day, but last night I was only understanding him 25-50 % of the time and he was sounding VERY apraxic, whereas he had become nearly 100% intelligible to me and conversational. Now I'm getting shorter phrases. I am going to go back to the brand and dose I was using before, because it seemed to be working. This is all new for me too. But he is as sensitive to decreases in vit E as he was to fish oil. I am not seeing and changes in coordination, but not going to wait around for that to happen to. - > I just brought some vitamin e at walgrEens(all walgreens vitamins are > buy one get one free f.y.i ) for my son 3years and 2mos. Guest guest
I am new to this group and although my son (3 1/2 yrs old) has been on ProEFA since he was 24 months, I am just learning that we can now give more than two a day and that we also need to give vitamin E. My son was diagnosed with apraxia through EI, but the private speech therapist he has had since he turned 3 feels he instead has a mild to moderate phonological disorder. Four days after starting the fish oil, he went from grunts with signs to 25 words in a week so he is a much different child from when he was first diagnosed. - What do you mean when you say our kids are differnt? Since I don't know what my son actually has, do I need to have a test done to see if he is deficient? I haven't started any yet because his pediatrician wanted to look into what would be toxic. If she says 400 IU is too much, do I just give it anyway? Also, could I have the exact name of what you are using since you said you were going back to it because your new brand didn't work. I want to make sure I get the right one that works. If this works, the timing on it couldn't be better. My son just started pre-school 2 weeks ago and when he tries to talk to the other kids, they just look at him and walk away because they don't understand what he is saying. My doctor, speech therapist and the teacher insist this will help to make him clearer because of the strong desire to talk to the other kids, but it breaks my heart to see. (Yes, due to some seperation issues I am having, I am still quietly sitting in the room.) Please help! __________________________________________________
Guest guest
My Will seems to have better coordination all though his " speech " isn't much improved. I do think he was trying to say " momma " yesterday. he is totally non verbal with no mouth noises. All of his noises come from his throat. He's been taking the Vit E for almost 2 weeks and I have missed a few days in there. We take the Alpha Gamma mix. each capsule has 200 IU Alpha and 200 IU gamma. He gets 2 each day. He's really been active and doing much more gross motor movement. Sherry " claudia.morris " <claudia.morris@...> wrote: You want to start out with at least 400 IU. It is harmless. Guest guest
My 7 yr old had 4 days of vit E but also had mag citrate 2 of those days to help w/constipation. Last night she had7 hrs of neurological issues......she couldn't talk, couldn't swallow well, wouldn't lay day and couldn't close her eyes or suck her thumb to try to sleep. She was very scared and asked over and over to go to hospital. Her O2 was fine, her skin very pale, flat facial affect. She doesn't have a rare underlying condition which is normal excellently controlled expcept when I have added things for constipations like miralax, lactolose, mineral oil. I don't know if it was the mag citrate and may be upsetting her 'system' (say system b/c I don'tknow what is really happening) or the vit E. I am sure there are many that don't expe. this level of sensitivity but thought I should share with the group anyways. I am not sure I will ever be able to tell you if unique to AHC or if mag citrate or vit e cause. I did think she had lots more energy once she started with vit e but also saw little bit with first uses of mag citrate. karen v. Guest guest
Yesterday we were at our couson's baseball game. My son said something that sounded like " potty " so I took him to the potty. He screamed and screamed! We went back to our seats. He made the same request so I took him back to the toileta nd sat him down upon it. Again, screaming! Just outside the door he pointed to the playground. He was trying to tell me he wanted to go to the playground and I thought he was trying to tell me he had to go potty! No wonder he was so frustrated! He cannot imitate. He is 39 mos old. He pretty much only makes vowel sounds. He can't make consonant sounds. I think you need to seek out different help for your son. Guest guest
Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Magnesium used to stop preterm labor?? I believe it gives woman the same feeling. I'm trying to recall hearing about this because I have never been given it. I would take an uneducated guess and say it sounds like a reaction to the Magnesium to me. Of course I think it's definitely worth calling your ped. and letting them know. How scary!! Maybe someone else can give more info..
I did think she had lots more energy once she started with vit e but also saw little bit with first uses of mag citrate. karen v. - Amy --------------------------------- Get your own web address for just $1.99/1st yr. We'll help. Guest guest
My daughter is on other medications for seizures (Keppra 500mgx2/day; lamictal 125mg day) and for Altern. Hemiplegia (flunarazine - a calcium channel blocker 15mg/day); CoQ10 50-100 mg/day. I stopped the vit e and mag for 2 days. Today I gave another low dose of natural calm which equals around 300mg (but she only drank half of this). She was ok. I wonder if the several days of using natural calm and then the one day of going back to the liquid mag citrate was a big build up in her system or that it dehydrated her. SHe has always been extremely sensitive and easily dehydrated since a baby. She would alwyas get constipated 4-5 days before cold symptoms showed up. I wondered with her longer term use of miralax and/or lactalose if somehow a dehyration was occuring just enough to upset her system and bring out the AHC like neuro symptoms she usually does not present with anymore. I was very worried I had upset her electrolytes possibly with magnesium even if I wasn't using alot but more the daily use of it. We are going to follow with a gastro but wonder if it is b/c of her calcium channel blocker what can we do b/c she can't come off this. Some children coming off these meds with AHC have had devestating reactions with month long episodes they never recover from. I hope there is an answer out there for her. I would like to start back the vit e once the constipation is resolved (for now) without mag. so I can see if we run into issues again. I have my fingers crossed for all those seeing/experience success with vit e. thanks for the advice karen and addie " claudia.morris " <claudia.morris@...> wrote: > > You want to start out with at least 400 IU. Guest guest
My guess -- it's the Miralax -- http://www.danasview.net/miralax.htm About 4% of it is absorbed into the system. Guest guest
Actually, the mag used for preterm labor is magnesium sulfate, not magnesium citrate. (believe me, I know......3 course of it. Yech!). So I'm not sure she's talking about the same thing. > My 7 yr old had 4 days of vit E but also had mag citrate 2 of those days to help w/constipation.
