Guest guest
My son is not autistic and before he had any words..he would hit himself in the head whenever he was opposed to a situation/request. He has since stopped. The only thing we knew to do was take his hands from his head and tell him it wasn't to be done again...I think it was purely out of frustration. My 2 cents... " karen_ting_blue " <jennyting@...> Dear All, I have one more question. My friend's son was diagnosed as autism. He likes to hit himself on the head, no matter when. Does one have any idea on how to handl this situation? Thank you.
Guest guest
is not autistic either but she would bang her head on the floor when she couldn't get her point across (this was before she could talk). Pure frustration. We know this because, once we taught her about 5 signs, this behavior stopped and has never surfaced again. THis may or may not be helpful, depending on whether the behavior is because of frustration or if it is more of a perseverative-type behavior NOT rooted in frustration. Guest guest
I'd recommend getting the book " The Out of Sync Child " it explains about sensory issues and offering a " sensory diet " to kids with sensory issues. I'm not through the entire book yet but what I've read so far has really helped me understand my son's behavior a lot better. My son doesn't hit himself but he does a lot of sensory seeking stuff like wanting to sit behind the couch cushions, sleep under his pillows at night, etc.... You may be able to get the book from the library (I couldn't get it soon so I bought it used from amazon.com). How old is your friend's son? If he's under 3, she should be working with Early Intervention and if he's over 3 she should be working with the school district. Either place should have therapists that can help. :-)Tera mama to Cole 9-11-03 - language delays and possible Autism Spectrum Disorder (waiting for an actual diagnosis and transitioning from EI to the school district now). and pregnant, due 11-2-06 " It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it " . Guest guest
Hi Laurie here mom to Mic 6 yrs old ds/asd. Mic hits himself usually his legs he does this when hes mad or just not getting his own way or when his Dad yells at him. He hits himself in the head something is not right he either has an ear ache or he has hit his head on something and its his reaction to pain.It took awhile to figure out what was causing his self hitting but believe me theres a reason. Now we try to reroute his hitting himself by rubbing his heading and hugging praise for the correct behavior and we ignore the hitting and reroute him.He still does this but not near as often.Look for a reason there is one. Hope this makes sense.

Guest guest
, Jeanne here You could also get his sinus's checked. If they are clogged that might also be giving him headaches, ie pressure. My friend's son had that problem, they had to get the pallups out, then he was fine. He stopped hitting his head. > > Dear All, > > I have one more question. My friend's son was diagnosed as autism. Guest guest
My kids both used to do this. Once we took gluten and dairy out of their diet and started giving them the supplements that they were deficient in (per nutritional analysis/blood work), the head banging stopped in my son. My daughter didn't stop head banging until we did a stool analysis and treated the bacterial overgrowth (clostridia) that was in her gut. Some gut bacteria can cause a lot of pain, and some kids will hurt themselves as a way to distract their attention from that pain. Has your friend investigated whether her son has medical issues? Many kids with autism have immune system problems (food sensitivities, gut dysbiosis, etc). > > Dear All, > > I have one more question. My friend's son was diagnosed as autism.
