Guest guest
Did he fail his hearing test because of the fluid? SOme kids hear just fine with fluid, though you would want tubes for the late-talker with fluid for sure. Does you son have any other concerning issues that may suggest apraxia? Did he babble normally as an infant or no? Does he understand much more than he can speak? Kids with hearing loss will also present with receptive language delays since they haven't been hearing the words properly? If there is any suspicion of apraxia, I would schedule the eval and get in with early intervention. If he is already behind (ie less than 10 words at 18 months or less than 50 words at 2 or no 2-word combinations, get him in with early intervention regardless. You can always cancel, but if he is behind even due to hearing loss, the services may help him catch up. If he is just a late talker - speech will come and no harm done in a little extra attention. But if apraxic - you will lose valuable time. It seems to take forever to get the appointments for evaluations given long waiting lists. Just a suggestion. Hope the tubes fix the problem! - [ ] Update on hearing test appt Hey, Just wanted to know if anyones children have had the tubes put in their ears. As I said earlier in my post, my son is 2yr and doesnt talk, so we scheduled hearing test and set him up for speech evaluation to rule things out and get him the help he needs. Well, it turns out that he has fluid in his ears and need the tubes put in. He goes on march 31st for the surgery. The ent told me to hold off on the speech eval for now to see how he does with the tubes. Is anyone or has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks. Guest guest
Lizzi, Ear infections can certainly result in an expressive language delay, and often some receptive delay, as well. Once a child is delayed even after the ear infections are resolved (with or without tubes), a speech-language pathologist can help facilitate acquisition of speech and provide the family with effective strategies for encouraging speech/language development. In addition, if any other more subtle things are going on related to oral-motor functioning, eating, etc., the SLP would often be able to detect and address these. You may want to contact your state's early intervention program and request an evaluation. Best of luck, Jill B. Guest guest
Jill, Thanks for the response. I have already contacted the early intervention people. I have an appointment on the 28th for the evaluation, but I think I am going to give them a call and ask to reschedule since the tubes go in on the 31st. Also, he has not had any ear infections. I will keep you posted. Thanks again. > > Lizzi, > > Ear infections can certainly result in an expressive language delay, and often some receptive delay, as well. Guest guest
My son is 3 and had fluid in both ears until about 22 to 24 months when he had tubes and adenoids surgery. I was told to wait until the fluid was cleared up and his first hearing test done. is still nonverbal with a vocab of 5 words. Not sure if we the norm or not but will be interesting to see what others say. Karin [ ] Update on hearing test appt Hey, Just wanted to know if anyones children have had the tubes put in their ears. Guest guest
hi my son had tubes put in his ears because he had perisistent fluid in his ears, probably for most if not all of his two years of life- no one ever picked up on it til he had a hearing eval under EI- i would have told you 100% that he can hear bc he answers us, etc. all those type things- i about fell on the floor when she told me he suffered from hearing loss- but be very careful about getting water in the ears afterwards- we went on vacation and my son put his head under water a couple tims before i could stop him and one tube came out!\ for some there is a drastic change after putting tubes in, and some not much change good luck! Guest guest
Hi Karin My daughter Andrianna only speaks a few words too. She has Global Developmental Delays and Dyspraxia. she had her hearing test done and they have come back normal. She is waiting to be seen by a Speech Therapist as the other one has left. I also find that having Andrianna in daycare twice a week has really helped with her developments. I do hope your son's hearing test is good news. Guest guest
Chrissy, had his hearing test months ago and it was normal. That was good news but his speech never improved. That left with more questions. We now have a diagnosis and just added Sensory Integration Disorder to his Verbal Apraxia dx. What global delays does your daughter have? How old is she again? It's nice to talk to others with the same history, not to compare children but to know you are not the only one. We are in London with the Navy and there is little support within the American community (the doctors have been wonderful in listening and learning from me) and the British system has a huge waiting list!! Guest guest
Hi Karin I am so glad that 's hearing test came back normal. Andrianna has Moderate Gross Motor Skills, Severe Speech Delays and diagnosed with Dyspraxia and her Fine Motor Skills are almost age appropriate. I found that having Andrianna in daycare mixing with other kids to tend to improve all areas of her devlelopment. I am in Perth Australia and it is nice to being able to talk to others in same situation as it can be isolating as most parents with normal kids tend to stick their heads in the sand like emus grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Andrianna is on the waiting list for a new Speech Therapist hopefully she will be seen soon at the end of March or in April. She is 2.4 years old. You are very welcome to IM me on chrissylionhearted@... or msn christinerowe63976@... anytime you want to chat hugs and good luck too Chrissy Jerry and Karin <jkfeagles@...> wrote: Chrissy, had his hearing test months ago and it was normal.
