GI chronic disease in Autism

In the SCIA Medical Disease Registry Statistics page we can clearly see that often, children with autism suffering from chronic GI disease including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic diseases that cause inflammation of the intestines. The most common symptoms of IBS and IBD are abdominal pain or discomfort often reported as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and/or constipation. The same inflammation could also lead to leaky gut syndrome and allergies. The large amounts of nitric oxide released during microglial activation have been frequently associated with chronic GI disease. Perhaps, the brain-gut connection in autism may be caused by microglial activation and the release of excessive amounts of nitric oxide.
