Guest guest
Hi Sherry, Thats wut i have been telling his teacher. he needs more time to process u might have to repeat few times b4 he acts on it.but she says i'm not trained on talking to kids with language delay but the SPED teacher is. She has 20 other kids in the class so she doesn't have time to do all this. We have IEP this tuesday n wut i have decided is give him longer time in the regular pre-k n repeat things till he gets or if they really want to help my child SPED teacher can teach him 1-0-1 30 mns in the morning n 30 mns in the afternoon in a seperate class without any other SPED children around other option is give him some shadow for the time where he is struggling with some stuff .I feel like this is a fair request if they really care abt my child . what u guys think.he is learning so much n i c some new words everyday. yesterday he stayed on green( good behavior) n did all the right things n got his smiley face.H e was so happy n proud to get one piece of candy from his teacher for good beahaviour it was worth million $$$$. Thanx for all the support. sulata. --- sherry silvern <srsilvern@...> wrote: > do you have something in the IEP that says your son > needs an extended time in which to respond to > questions and such? if the teacher is being > impatient, expecting him to express his responses in > the same amount of time as the other kids, that > ain't gonna happen! the delay in responsiveness > gives a lot of people the idea that our apraxic kids > are " slow " when, in fact, they're processing not > only the information coming in but also how to get > the response/expression out. you might want to > mention that to the teacher - see if she'll take > that into consideration even without it being in the > IEP. > > Sherry > > sulata shetty <sulatashetty@...> wrote: > hi, > I'm going through similar crisis. well my son who > turned 4 in july goes mainstream pre-k. he started > on > july 19 but already sky is falling down. his teacher > complains everyday. they did the IEP in may and i > fought like hell to put him in mainstream cuz he has > expressive language delay and also he is hard headed > copys all the things so easily. now the teacher > wants > him to go to SPED for part of the day cyz she says > he > doesn't understand everything i tell him and most of > the times he says he doesn't wanna do it whatever > she > tells him to it. then ends up getting time out n > ISS. > my problem with SPED is all the kids in that class > hardly say a word most of them are austistic, they > hit, kick, bite scream. how can i make them understand > that he is gonna copy all that. when i told the > principal of the school she says well kids learn it > no > matter where they are. they called IEP meeting next > tuesday n i want them to give longer time for the > child to get adjusted to regular class since he has > language delay. in last 20 days he learnt so much. > his > behaviour is getting better too. i'm so confused. Guest guest
does your son have a 1-0-1? sounds like he is making strides - particularly with the " on green " (I'm assuming that's a behavior thing?) - that's great! sounds also like the teacher needs some training - you can have that written into the IEP as well, you know! keep up your good work on behalf of your son and remember to give him huge hugs for all his hard work! Guest guest
Hi, all, it is a busy time of the year isn't it? School, placement, all the roadblocks, etc. This message really struck a chord with me. I enrolled in the T-K program during enrollment. The sped preschool teacher is so not happy about it. In fact, she informed me that her plan would be to keep him in PALS for another two years, which would mean almost 5 years in her class. Her reasoning is that he is lang. delayed, etc. So, I was told that he couldn't transition into the T-K class from the PALS class and would have to go all day. So I figured, okay, whatever. I went Friday for the compact mtg. with the T-K teacher, and the PAls teacher sat in and again tried to talk me out of it. She got the principal in there, and started throwing out reasons why he wouldn't do well in the T-K class, like behavior issues. I've been griping about 's sensory issues, and transition difficulties and she has always said he acts just fine in her class. So I made sure and mentioned that I just 'didn't get ' where she was coming from, since there are no behavior goals and obj. on his IEP. Zing! We ended up agreeing to a team meeting on Monday a.m. to discuss the issue with all team members present. I am pretty ticked by the whole deal, they're acting as though is mentally handicapped, won't behave and will not do well in less restrictive setting. It's so irritating that even people who should know him well are judging his intelligence on his intelligibility. Oh, and they were supposed to provide speech services all summer, and never notified me of times beyond regular summer school. Now the speech path is claiming I never showed up! Like I don't have a phone number. Hers is unlisted. Mine is not. Not to mention we work for the same school district. I'm a sped teacher in an elementary school and they're trying to pull this garbage on me. I guess it's open season, huh? Hope everyone else's beginning of the year is going better than mine. Wish me luck on Monday at the ambush! bye; Roni > > hi, > > I'm going through similar crisis. well my son who > > turned 4 in july goes mainstream pre-k. he started > > on > > july 19 but already sky is falling down. his teacher > > complains everyday. they did the IEP in may and i > > fought like hell to put him in mainstream cuz he has > > expressive language delay and also he is hard headed > > copys all the things so easily. now the teacher > > wants > > him to go to SPED for part of the day cyz she says > > he > > doesn't understand everything i tell him and most of > > the times he says he doesn't wanna do it whatever > > she > > tells him to it. then ends up getting time out n > > ISS. > > my problem with SPED is all the kids in that class > > hardly say a word most of them are austistic, they > > hit, kick, bite scream. how can i make them understand > > that he is gonna copy all that. when i told the > > principal of the school she says well kids learn it > > no > > matter where they are. they called IEP meeting next > > tuesday n i want them to give longer time for the > > child to get adjusted to regular class since he has > > language delay. in last 20 days he learnt so much. > > his > > behaviour is getting better too. i'm so confused. Guest guest
I feel your pain and frustration. Sometimes I wish I could just keep my son at home with me for the rest of his life. I wish that there was one big center where we could all take out kids and know that they are being cared for effectively. <abcdefg362000@...> wrote: Hi, all, it is a busy time of the year isn't it?
