Guest guest
I promised I would drop in now and again when I find there is something new or useful for the families. I am an educational specialist (deafblind 15 years; presently visual impairment with additional disabilities the past 7 years). This year I offered to take one of the other class with younger children (11-13) 2 periods a week. One student confirmed CHARGE, still non-verbal and very much classic evidence of global apraxia; the other students also some non- verbal. Working with adapted computer equipment early on important for CHARGE'rs and others with speech/apraxia issues. Here the updated Dell computers are not compatible with Intellekeys and all the software that was all really great. There is this new keyboard out -- thinking because it is difficult enough with fine motor control and finger spread, it would be great to try for those who have not yet been exposed to keyboarding, and perhaps are working presently on the cause/effect programs with adapted equipment. Here is the link; http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/07/technology/07keyboard.html? ex=1323147600 & en=9fb57ade4c60f845 & ei=5088 & partner=rssnyt & emc=rss Let me know if anyone decides to try it and has some success. It seems like a much better way to teach keyboarding for our kids. Please mail me off list (I know there are a few educational questions I have to catch up on, but eventually I'll get to it.) Guest guest
I don't think I would teach anyone to type on one of those. The intellikeys is a much better option, in fact I would go with a regualar qwerty keyboard over this. What is the problem you are having with the intellikeys? If you are using the older version then yes you are going to have problems. You will either have to get a converter cable or buy a usb intellikeys. The newer Dell computers I am assuming are running windows XP. If you install a program that was designed for an earlier version of windows then you can have XP run it in " Legacy mode " You should be able to find info on it by searching Google. Now there is some software that allows access to other programs like JAWS, ZoomText, Dragon, etc. those need to be at the latest version. Find a high school computer gamer and they should be able to help you after you explain that your intellikeys game was designed for an earlier version of windows and your game board (intellikeys keyboard) wouldn't connect to this new computer. If all else fails you can call me. -- Beth Koenig bethko@... Guest guest
wow lisa, thanks, ! i looked at it, so since i have the jelly bean switch, this is all i need for the computor use? i think this would be much better than the touch screen! Guest guest
COle, instead of needing the fine motor skills necessary to manipulate a mouse, the 'switch' (big button) does the same job for making things happen on the screen and folks with limited motor skills can use the switch or switches to play different games, make choices about what they want, etc. Hope this helps. Guest guest
oh so it's like a big joystick - or a series of buttons that work together like a big joystick - i get it (i have to admit that i originally had a picture of a switch made out of jellybeans - which is why i googled it cuz i knew that was wrong but it was a funny picture) Cole > > COle, instead of needing the fine motor skills necessary to manipulate a > mouse, the 'switch' (big button) does the same job for making things > happen > on the screen and folks with limited motor skills can use the switch or > switches to play different games, make choices about what they want, etc. > Hope this helps. > Lis > > On 12/11/06, Angelcole <Angelcole@... <Angelcole%40gmail.com>> > wrote: > > > > okay, i went and googled jelly bean switch and i saw what it looks > > like... > > but how exactly is it used? please? > > Cole (who just never stops learning on this list) > > > > On 12/11/06, Weir <kawfolks@... <kawfolks%40gmail.com><kawfolks%40gmail.com>> wrote: > > > > > > Cathie, > > > The jelly bean switch is hooked up with a special adapter a Don > ston > > > Switch Interface. > > > Here is the link: > > > > > > > > > http://www.donjohnston.com/products/access_solutions/hardware/switch_interface_p\ ro_5/index.html > > > > > > I used these with the little boy I used to work with; they work > great!~ > > > > > > www.chargesyndrome.info > > > > > > On 12/11/06, NPTQueenie@... <NPTQueenie%40aol.com> <NPTQueenie% > 40aol.com> <NPTQueenie% > > 40aol.com> <NPTQueenie@... <NPTQueenie%40aol.com> <NPTQueenie% > 40aol.com><NPTQueenie%40aol.com > > >> > > > wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ann, that is great, but i still think to involved for my daughter. > > > > however, we are working on cause and effect, and at school they are > > > using > > > > the jelly bean switch w/computor. > > > > I would like to get something at home, and have been researching > touch > > > > screens and programs/games with cause and effect. do you have any > > > > recommendations? also, we have ajelly bean switch at home, how would > i > > > > find out how to hook > > > > that up to our comptuor? > > > > thanks for your input, we always apprecaite it! > > > > Cathie, mom to 11 yr CHARGE'r deafblind > > > > > > > >
