<OT> Replacing a Motherboard

The motherboard died on one of my PCs, and Gateway is shipping me a new one.

Do any of you techie type folks out there know if a regular person (read not a

technician) can replace this?

My roomie is not a techie, but she did figure out how to replace a CD-ROM and a

hard drive for me one time. I'm just wondering if replacing a motherboard is

more complicated and if I should pay a tech to do it.

Rennie, it is much more complicated because you have to connect everything in

your computer to it. I have done hard drives and cd-roms myself but would not

attempt a motherboard on just that experience without help from someone who had

done it a lot before. There are too many things that can go wrong. Hth! Sylvia

I build all of our computers from scratch and installing a motherboard can

be tricky. You risk damaging any of the peripheral cards (video, network,

sound) that have to be removed from and put back in the new motherboard,

pulling and putting back the memory, getting the connections on correctly

and securely, and then there is a possibility of creating a short between

the motherboard and the case if not installed exactly in position. While

the short will most of the time not damage the board it will keep it from

operating properly and is hard to diagnose. I find it a fun hobby and you

may well want to start learning to do these things on your own but also be

ready for trouble and/or obstacles as they can pop up.
