Guest guest Posted August 1, 2005 Report Share Posted August 1, 2005 The only difference for my son prior to transplant (diagnosed at 13, tx at 21) was that his neph wanted him to get the flu immunization every fall because flu likely would cause a dramatic flare-up of the IgAN. In fact, they want immunizations all up to date prior to transplant because afterwards, you can't get any immunizations for a year due to the high levels of immunosuppressants. My youngest daughter, who will start school this Thursday had her four year old shot in October of 2004. They would not give her the MMR shot due to Allie being on steroids. She just now received that one. Hope that helps. The MMR has a live vaccine and that is not allowed. My two cents on immunizations is that my Neph also told me to get a flu vaccination every year. I have done so for the past 10 years or so and have managed to avoid the flu. I think the hardest thing for me is hearing when young ones are diagnosed with IgAN. How wonderful that he is taking responsibility for his diet like that at such a young age! At his end of May check up his level was 450 units (started out on 5mg and upped to 10mg Enalapril). He goes for his next nephro appt this Wednesday. Can't wait to see the results. The docs on Nephkids seem to suggest that if the kid is not very immunosuppressed, immunizations are OK. however, a lot depends upon what meds the child is taking. For example, in son's case, we intentionally did a bunch of vaccines before starting a course of cyclosporine just to get them out of the way before he was too medicated to take them. Some docs also distinguish between live vaccines and others.
