Guest guest
I need opinions, my back is killing me and my husband is insisting that I get a new chair. I would like your opinions as to whether there is a certain type of chair I should look for. Thanks,
Guest guest
, Yes get an ergonomically correct chair. They have different price ranges and a bunch to choose from at Staples. Dyan
Guest guest
Another avenue would be to get in touch with a physical therapist, they can probably tell you what to look for in a chair. I do remember that when we had someone talk to use at an AAMT chapter meeting be sure your thighs are well supported. The seat portion should be large enough (front to back) that when you sit in it it should come to within 1 inch (?). I do remember, at one of my first jobs, that the chair they had for me -- though new -- was soo...narrow that it squeezed my hips (yes I am a large woman). There are also chairs out there that when you adjust the back angle the seat adjusts at the same time (avoid these). But, also, what Allie said is true -- make sure it fits you and not your husband or the salesperson or the kids (2 and 4-legged), etc. I, am also looking at for a future purchase. I am, personally, looking for one that can be adjusted easily for height both from floor to seat and height of the back. Some have built-in lumbar supports and I have heard recently that these will make your back " lazy " . Personally, if it was made to fit me where it was needed, since you are already having some " issues " I would not let this last bit of advice deter you from buying it. Guest guest
Do ya'll actually sit all the way into your chairs? I know that's crazy to ask, but I have never been able to sit back in my chair. I have short legs, only 5'1 " , but no matter, I'm so comfortable with sitting up towards the front of a chair. I just bought an executive style from Office Depots and so far it is pretty comfortable. It was rather steep at $299, but with the warranty, I can have it replaced. I previously had bought $99 dollar chairs and it was no time that I felt the hardness of the wood......whatever happened to padding? Do they even make that anymore? c -- Re: OT: Opinions needed for new chair Another avenue would be to get in touch with a physical therapist, they can probably tell you what to look for in a chair. Guest guest
That's exactly the problem I'm having.. The chair I'm using now wasn't cheap, and when I first bought it, it was like sitting on a cloud. Now the seat is pretty much flat and I'm having to sit on a pillow, and the right padded arm right is so flat, if you touch it, you can feel the screw in the wood. What I'd really like to know is how well a chair will last.. how long the padding will hold up. As you said, Carol, my first chair was a $99 one and it didn't last long at all once I came home to work and was sitting in it day in and day out instead of just in the evenings, so this time I got a more expensive chair.. probably close to $200 as I recall, and it has lasted a couple of years, but here I am again needing a new chair. I realize no chair is going to last forever, but I'd like to get the most for my money. I wouldn't mind spending more for one chair that might last, say, 4 or 5 years, as opposed to $100 or $200 for a chair that has to be replaced more often. Jan jantranscribes@... " Typing is my life. Guest guest
Here is the chair I use after a bout with a herniated disk. http://www.officeorganix.com/GLBKneel.htm I got mine at Office Max and ordered it online and even with shipping was reasonably priced. The chair itself was around $59 at the time and it's been a couple of years since I bought it. If you want to search on this type, they're called " kneeling chairs " . Guest guest
Robyn Thanks for this link. Do you use a foot pedal for transcription and, if so, how do you manage it with the kneeling chair? I'd like to follow up on a similar chair but am not sure how I'd manage a foot pedal. There's always hot keys but I'm not a great fan of that option. TIA. Guest guest
Thanks for asking that. I was wondering exactly the same thing Jan jantranscribes@... " Typing is my life. Guest guest
I last about 10 minutes on those chairs before I start getting really fidgety. Never mind the foot pedal! My brother loves his.
