a question about my sons growth?

Hi everyone.

I have a question for you all. I have been wondering if children with

apraxia/dyspraxia tend to be on the small side in size.

Is this the norm for them? My son is going to be in second grade this

year. I took for his 8 yr old well child visit yesterday. He only weighs

45.5 lbs and is 44 inches tall (3ft some odd inches). He is below the 5th

percentile on the growth chart in weight and height both. Since birth he has

been on the very small size.

Is this the norm for children with apraxia/dyspraxia. I am just curious if

this is just my child. I was wondering out of curiousity (my own) if others

children were small in size also.

Thank you for any feedback.

I don't believe apraxia has anything to do with being over or

undersized because in the group we have children at both ends of the

extreme...and many in the norm too -just like if you took a sample

of any group of children. My son Tanner for example of the opposite

(as you'll find in the archives) has always been off the charts tall

for his age. When he was 3 a geneticist had him go for a wrist X-

ray to rule out if his bones were growing faster then his body...but

in fact his bone age was younger then his chronological age...which

meant that Tanner is going to be a tall guy one day.

Today at 10 Tanner's about as tall as many 13 year olds. Dawn just

met him for the first time at Disney -so perhaps she can share.

has always been pretty small. She has been in the 5th

percentile in weight since birth and only at her 3 year well-child visit

last month did she actually get out of the 5th percentile for weight ...

she is in the 25th now! This is huge for us! She is in about the 25th

percentile for height at the moment. She is 36 inches tall and weighs

26.5 pounds at 3 years old.

My other daughter (1) is in the 25th percentile for weight and

60th percentile for height (19 pounds 11 ounces / 29.25 inches tall).

I don't think that 's delicate build has anything to do with the

apraxia. Although I am 5'5 " , I come from small stock ;-).

Interesting question!

Warm regards,

Don't know if it's the norm - if it is, Josh is way off the norm! He's huge!

Josh is 8 years old, too, weighs 92 pounds (he is overweight) but is also 53

inches tall! He's almost as tall as my mom! He was very small at birth (5

lbs., 11 oz.) and only 19 inches. But he has done nothing but grow, grow,

grow!!

Hi,

I just took my child last week for his who's 3 to the doctors for

his well visit and he weighs 31 pds. and 37 1/2 in in height and

they said he's in the 45% for both height and weight they said he

was normal for both . He was just diagonsed with apraxia last

week .SO maybe it's just like you said he's just small. I hope this

helped.

Hello Jeanne, my daughter Kayla is small for her age as well. She is 8 1/2

years old. Kayla weighs 37 lbs and she is 47 inches tall. She has always been

below the 5 percentile for her weight. Her height is always around 10th - 25th

percentile. Since she is healthy, I just stop worry about it. I think the

doctors wanted to think it was due to her apraxia.

May I add some thoughts too? Since some of the kids MAY have issues

with gluten, casein, food allergies or malabsorbed dietary fat, that

can lead to " failure to thrive " .

If there's anything I've learned from all of this -- it's all

connected! You can't have digestive issues and expect the brain to

perform well, you can't expect growth if nutrients are being

absorbed, etc.

Hi Jeanne,

My apraxic daughter is around the 25th percentile, and her younger

sister (no developmental delays) is at 95th for height and 75th for

weight. Just our experience - I doubt you will find any correlation

with the group as a whole.

My dd is going into second and will be 8 this week.

She weighs 38 lbs and is 42 inches tall. She did have a bone age scan done 2

years ago that showed her bone age to be 2.4 years behind her actual age.

It seems that our bones to not age as we do...some do faster and some do

slower.
