Guest guest
Andi, I have read quite a bit about the side effects of prednisone and experienced many myself in the last 10 years I have been on it. I have UC and have experienced a number of flares. In my care, Prednisone has always been the first and primary course of treatment in the short term. I have never heard that addiction is a concern. I take sulfasalazine (I am allergic to asacol) and have never had a problem with taking both, nor an inclination to not take sulfasalazine while taking prednisone. If the only reason your GI is not prescribing prednisone is the concern about possible addiction, I would see someone else, or at least get a second opinion. There are serious problems that can occur from untreated active UC and Crohns beyond the immediate discomfort and unpleasantness, and you don't want to leave it active if prednisone will bring it under control. I am curious what course of treatment your GI did prescribe? Darryl In answer to: I have Crohns in my small intestine and colon. My most recent GI does not give Prednisone to anyone with UC or Crohns even if they have a crippling flare (vomiting from inflamed small bowel and watery runs) because the Veterans Administration beleives that Prednisone is addictive and that patients will not take their other medication (Asacol, Pentasa etc..) if they take the steroid.Ive had to get it at the emergency room...this time "today" they told me was the last...AndiGet a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com.
