Guest guest
I had in my message " The following is horrible and is in no way indicative of ABA therapists as a rule. This is just another lesson about the importance of knowing the professionals that work with your child. " (exact quote) As Carolyn said I never said ABA is " bad " I have always said to " proceed with caution " for those who may not need it. And it's the only therapy I've said this about. For the person that asked why I question it at all (as if it's above being questioned -as if anything or anyone is) Out of all the possible therapies a child with apraxia could be given -including how many zillion alternative therapies -ABA is the only one to proceed with caution -and why? I've personally met children who were traumatized by it, and we've read about it recently and it comes up in the archives. The most well known story on the CHERAB site is Ketchum's story. Because of ABA she developed post traumatic stress. http://www.cherab.org/news/.html and isn't the only one on the web diagnosed with post traumatic stress from ABA http://www.astraeasweb.net/politics/aba.html or question the " ethics " of it http://www.sentex.net/~nexus23/naa_aba.html The type of ABA appropriate for a child with autism and apraxia would be a modified ABA where the therapist is aware of the child's motor planning disability. Apraxia is the disability of performing on command. This has come up over and over in the archives. However that's not the point of the posting and apparently the point was lost. What is not disputable is that the woman that is charged with murder of the two year old was an ABA therapist who worked with children and she had a prior criminal history of heroin abuse and child abuse. (I again did not state that example is indicative of all ABA therapists) What to me anyway is shocking is that this woman has a history of child abuse and still was practicing ABA on children and was listed as a resource for ABA therapy. Why? Because I guess some thought it's not appropriate to talk about it when she was first charged with abuse when she just " injured " a child and didn't kill the child. And it's not OK to talk about it now either? What if she again gets out of jail and again starts practicing ABA therapy?! Is that OK too because after all not all are like her?! Even real estate agents convicted of most crimes lose their license! The point is how did this woman end up alone with this child, any child, with her history?! You have a right to your opinion as we all do. Let's agree that it's important to know who to trust with your child - that's the point of the message. And for the one who said me posting it compares to reading the National Enquirer. I don't read the National Enquirer, but from what I know -the National Enquirer is a bunch of made up stories that are sensationalized enough to headlines that people want to buy the rag to read more. I wish that story was just made up by some sick person -but it's not. The story I posted here -a grouplist which consists of parents and professionals that work with children that age and with that diagnosis. The fact that this happened doesn't mean let's turn our backs and say " oh well " It means there needs to be tougher background checks on who has a license to work with children. A person with a history of child abuse shouldn't be working with children period! No less (God Forbid!!!) An ABA therapist?! You know what I'm wondering about -where the compassion is for this poor family. For this poor sweet two year old child who didn't have a chance for a life. Who God knows went through what before his last minutes on Earth. I thought there would be outrage that a person with a history of child abuse would be allowed to be any type of therapist no less an ABA therapist! Those were the type of responses I thought would come back from parents and professionals who care for children just like this. A lady was walking with her child in a stroller down a street in a town around me that didn't have sidewalks and was killed by a hit and run driver right in front of her child. It was on the news and in the paper. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/treasurecoast/content/local_news/epaper/2006/01/26/\ 0126hitrun.html They caught the guy. And they are putting sidewalks in. Why? Because people were outraged. Not that the paper had it in the news -but were outraged by the fact someone hit a mom with a stroller and fled. Outraged that if sidewalks were there it probably wouldn't have happened. Now there will be sidewalks. I shared what I did to keep this from happening to any of our children -and wish those parents of that poor two year old had the chance to read it prior to letting this criminal work with their baby. I let the webmaster that listed her as a resource know " Take her name off your site " Why? Because I'm outraged. If any of you want to continue to argue about this -let's share how to stop this from ever happening again. My prayers for that poor family and that poor little baby. =====
Guest guest
I think you are right! We should check who is working with our child, we should not just believe in recommendation letters or interviews. I call everyone from the list and besides that I will tape and I will watch some of the sessions. I am always nearby anyway because I want to learn everything about my son, and because I don't trust no one until prove I'm wrong (I know it is not nice but I'm from Brazil, we learn to look the sides as soon as we born ƒº). I taped a lot , good therapist doesn¡¦t mind at all. I learn a lot about how to help my son this way and help to make all the therapy unison. I do this with ABA, speech and even school !!! Guest guest
From the webmaster of the site http://rsaffran.tripod.com/consultants.html that listed this woman as an ABA resource: " RE: May want to remove one of your resources > - > > That's really terrible.
