Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have a question for anyone outthere who may know... I had a friend today tell me that a ultrasound she had discovered that her placenta is bleeding and she needs to be on bedrest for the rest of her pregnancy. She's only 18 weeks pregnant. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Guest guest
In my " day job " I am a prenatal genetic counselor, so I see this pretty often. As I'm sure you know, the placenta is how the baby gets oxygen and nourishment from the mom. It is attached to the mother's uterus... the umbilical cord is the connection from the placenta to the baby. If the attachment of the placenta to the uterus is not strong, the baby wont' get enough nourishment. This can result in a small baby or could get worse - if the placenta detaches the baby won't survive. If placental bleeding happens early (18 weeks, as you describe), that is a very seriuos complication. The only thing that can be done is bedrest - keep everything " quiet " and hope it goes well. I'm sure your friend will have more ultrasounds. In the best case scenario, the palcenta " heals " and all looks well and normal activity can be resumed. Unfortunately, it can get worse and result in loss of the pregnancy. It is not related to any genetic conditons or anything the mom does during preganancy - it's one of those random things hta can happen - picked up by routine ultrasound or ultrasound after some bleeding. Guest guest
I asked my sister, a child birth educator & doula, what this means: here's what she said! Best wishes!! -Theresa Usually that there is a risk for an abrubtion (not deeply attached at least in part). How do they know it is placenta? By US? Could also be dx of 'threatened abortion', meaning they are concerned for miscarriage, would be stillbirth at 20 weeks or more if that were to happen. Viability is 24 weeks. She should adhere to bedrest!! > Hi everyone, I have a question for anyone outthere who may know...
