Guest guest
I know, the long time members of the group are saying ... "not again." This is for the newer members. Although I was a slow learner at first, it became apparent that it was prudent to have bile cultures (or tissue samples) done each and every time I had an invasive procedure. If wee beasties are found, the doctors can target the bacteria with the appropriate antibiotic without using the shotgun approach. I am allergic to many antibiotics and have permanent vestibular damage from gentamicin. I had a wonderful infectious disease specialist who managed my antibiotics and his expertise and willingness to listen to my symptoms and ask for cultures spared me a lot of damage. I was lucky enough to reach him on a weekend in the middle of an allergic reaction to ceftazadime, and I described my "wobbly" symptoms to him and he was the one who realized that my inner ears were being damaged and asked an ENT to have me tested. While antibiotics are amazing, they are not without significant risk. Penny
