a, When I looked up anemia in Stedman's Lab book under microcytic I found

microcytic hypochromic. I believe your doc is not thinking about what chromic

means and has gotten the wrong prefix. Hypochromic anemia is referring to

" decrease in light absorption with a shift in wavelength to a lower wavelength "

(per SEMD). I believe that is the word he is looking for to go with microcytic

rather than microchromic. Just my thoughts, Margaret

Patient with microcytic (s/l " microchromic " ) anemia. I cannot document this

word and am guessing that she means normochromic. Anybody seen this combination

before? Gogle shows only 2 hits.

Thanks!

That sounds right from a lab viewpoint also. BTW, in plain English

hypochromic means that as you view the cells on the slide as part of a

peripheral smear, there isn't as much color (in this case red) in the

cells and they appear sort of faded out in comparison with normal red

cells.

Hi a,

I found this on the net.

Microcytic = Small red blood cells.

Microchromic = Inadequate color of red blood cells.

CBC: microcytic, microchromic anemia.

So, it's discribing what the anemia is by using those two words

separated by a comma. It was typed just like you see it above.

hope this helps,

Ashton

Thank you, Ashton. I was discouraged by the small number of hits Google

turned up, so when I could not document the term in any " reliable " source, I

did not look any closer. Guess I should have!

Thanks for going to the trouble.
