Good to here about the surgery results :)

It does hurt, I know. Kindness and caring, love, kind of melts all those

defences and then all the hurt and need comes up and it HURTS. It's natural

to want to keep those feelings down, and the defenses up. That's why it's

easier to try to make people hate us. We can cope with people beign angry

with us or whatever, but kindness just cuts through all those walls.

Aubrie's hearing

Hi!

You know, Aubrie had inner ear reconstruction several weeks ago. We go for

the follow-up visit on Monday. Immediately post-op, when I whispered in her

good ear, she could hear me fine. When I whispered in her bad ear (which

had the surgery), she couldn't understand any of my words. About 2 weeks

later, she asked to not use the FM system at school because it was too loud.

So I tried the test again. When I whispered in her bad ear, she could hear

and understand my words, but not as well as in her good ear.

This morning, when I whispered in her good and then her bad ear, she

couldn't tell which was better. I then whispered the Ling sounds (a sound

from each frequency level) in each ear. She accurately heard all sounds in

both ears. Then I did the Ling from a few feet away with her hearing aid

off and with it on. She heard all sounds with and without the aid and

couldn't tell which was better! Before surgery, without her hearing aid,

she could not hear the " f " sound.

The audiologist at school did a hearing check today. She didn't get to send

the audiogram home and I was expecting it so I didn't listen really well as

she told me the results by phone I think she said she had a 35db or so

improvement in her bad ear. And the difference between her 2 ears is now

small enough that she doesn't have to mask her good ear when testing the

bad. If I remember right, the threshold for that is a 40db difference - if

the difference is 40db or above, masking is required. So. we seem to be

having real changes - big changes!

For now, we are still using the bone conduction (softband BAHA) aid because

it is of benefit. When we go on Monday, we'll take her regular hearing aids

to see if they can be reset to meet her needs now. I'm not sure with kind

of amplification will make sense. And I'm not sure how much more things

will improve and how long the healing process continues before we hit the

peak of improvement.

We are so excited!

Lots to be thankful for this year!

The doctor didn't know what to expect when he went in her ear. What he

found was a very normal structure with just the middle bone (anvil)

misshapen. So he carved it to the right shape, reset it, and then hoped for

good healing. He said is was a straight forward procedure that he performs

constantly with great results.

Cathy-

We did a trial with a bone conduction aid and Aubrie loved it! There was

improvement in her speech, and she didn't want to go back to regular aids.

We planned surgery to place a screw for the BAHA abutment. But first, the

dr took a look in her ear in case he could fix anything in there that was

causing the conductive loss. He found everything in order except the 2nd

middle ear bone (the incus). He reshaped it - actually sculpted the bone

she had - and reset everything.

So now, you know, I can't help looking back and wondering why we didn't know

this sooner. If this slight malformation was the culprit all along, how

could we have known that earlier and fixed it? If this makes as huge a

difference as we hope, imagine if we'd have done it when she was 2!

Hi Michele

That's great news about Aubrie's hearing - I went to tell Flo (she had asked

me to keep her up to date on news from the listserv) and I discovered that

she had read it already. She had signed in as me!

Best wishes

Michele,

This, again, is fabulous news. I can't help thinking, however, what it

would/could have meant if this technology had been available for 22

years ago. Now, her hearing tests are flat. Shortly after birth she was

corrected to boarderline normal in her right ear and severe in her left. I

wonder if anything can be done after the damage of all of the years of

infections. The wonderful ENT we eventually hooked up with in Boston

(after many horrid drs even there), didn't seem to think that anything could

be done, but even that was several years ago now. I don't think anyone

ever examined 's ears the way it seems to be done now. Makes me

sad. Does anyone know whether something could possibly be

done???Martha

Our doctor said that the kind of thing he saw in Aubrie is most often seen

as a result of infections damaging the bone. In her case, he thinks it was

congenital since her hearing has been consistent since birth. Seems like

it's worth looking inside to see what's going on, doesn't it?
