I dont think I even really told you guys we were going on a trip. LOL

Jeff and I and the kids went to Kansas City for a few days this week.

We went to the University of Kansas to be part of a study on infants

who have siblings with autism. So they wanted to see Miss Yessenia's

brain waves. ;) The plane trips both times were very good. The kids

were great. Alec and Yessenia slept both times almost the entire way

and no drugs even! But they were both still getting over some pretty

bad colds. Greggory loved the plane trip but hated the pressure on

his ears and head when we were landing. The day after we got there

was very long. Testing for almost 11 hours. ugh. But we survived and

Alec actually said " NO! ANGRY! " to jeff. He did NOT want to do the

testing. LOL But what a verbal breakthrough! :) Yessenia cried most

of the day. ugh. I believe she was bored stiff and very irritated at

all of it. Greggory was as good as could be. They even measured my

brain waves. Turns out that nuerologically I have a very extreme

reaction to stimuli but dont seem to show it at all in my day to day

life. Weird. But the dr was very concerned about Yessenia and thinks

she needs therapy now. She beleives Yessenia is at very, very high

risk for developing autism(if that is the right way to say it). Also

BiPolar. ugh. I was very upset when she said that Yessenia is

developmentally delayed as much as 4 months. That is alot for a 7

month old. Anyway, I will be back on the list for a few days and then

I need to take a break. I hope (and I am sure you do) understand why

I need to take this time.

What???

BUT SHE'S JUST A BABY!!!

Jacquie, some doctors are alarmists. Surely she's too young for them to know

this???

ugh. I was very upset when she said that Yessenia is

Was this based on testing or something else? Maybe she was just having a bad

day?

((((((((Jacquie)))))))) Big hugs to you. Have you been worried at all about

Yessenia?? I may have missed it but haven't heard/read anything about it

from you. I'm thinking this doc was being a little too cautious or an

alarmist?? I realize I'm new to ASD and all the goes with it but I can't

imagine a baby showing signs of anything like that yet.

I do understand your need for a break and please know that I'm praying for

you and thinking about you!!!

Oh, Jacquie! I wish I had known you were here! I live in the town

you were at: Lawrence, Kansas! Unless you were in Kansas City,

Kansas at the University of Kansas medical center and even then you

were about 30 miles away. I have been home with a sick kid since

Wed. am, but we could have talked. If you ever have to come back for

retesting, call me! Did they pay your way here?

I know you are worried about Yessenia, but remember she IS only 7

months old and has a big future ahead of her. Nobody knows how she

will be in 6mos, 1 year, 10 years, etc. not even the experts! You

have experience and patience and knowledge about autism that none of

those doctors have. You hang in there and coem to chat whenever you

can for relief.

Oh, man, I can't believe I missed seeing you'all. Leggs

Hmm. Well, naturally you knew she was somewhat at risk, given that she has

two ASD brothers. How is she delayed? And what kind of therapy? It

must be hard for you to know whether there is any validity since you have

only had autistic babies...

I have heard that there are some very definite ways that you can show autism

in a baby, but I do not remember the details.

I wish I had remembered to tell you too. LOL We were on 42nd st in Kansas City.

But we didnt have a car or anything. It was a pain in the butt! But we will be

going back in 4 months. Anbd that time we will have a rental car the entire

time! :P I agree that we just dont know what will happen with Yessenia down the

road. I still think it is too early to tell. I do worry about some things but

mostly I feel I just cant tell. I never thought she was behind in anything but

babbling. ugh.

Jacquie,

I don't really know what to say. I'm really sorry the trip was such a

downer. I'll be thinking good thoughts about Yessenia, and hopefully things

will turn out okay.

I also know all about taking a break. I needed to, but unlike you, I took

can get some rest. Take care.

Tuna,

started his Early Intervention through our school district at 6

months of age and at 9 months. They begin with PT and sensory

integration therapy, body massage, etc., then have some time in small

groups...the parents participate at this age. As they get older, they add

OT if needed and the kids do more group activities where they are more into

the singing, hand movements etc., then add speech.

sounds kind of fun, actually. i'm not really one for play groups, but at least

you'd all have a common bond at this one.

Whoa. Did you expect anything like that at all? It must have been such a

blow.

What kind of therapy does the Dr recommend for a 7 month old? Is it

something you can access where you are?

How is Jeff handling it?

It's not a play group. It's a teacher leading parents in all of the

activities we had. The parents were there to be the care givers of the

little ones, help seat them, take directions, etc.. During music we would

help the kids do hand motions (a bit older, of course). They would have the

kids experience their hands in pudding, whipped cream, etc.. The kids in my

kids groups had a different types of disabilities. But yes, you are right

about at least having a common bond with the parents at this program. I

must say, I sometimes wonder where my kids would be right now if they hadn't

been in a program so very early... was in it for almost 5 years before

we ever got to the autism diagnosis and you know how long it took for

....

I have been worried that Yessenia is not babbling yet and that she doesnt seem

to want to coo back and forth with me and Jeff anymore. She did as a very small

infant. She has just been very busy reaching alot of milestones so hopefully

that is it. She was really very sick for about 5 weeks and that is when she

stopped the cooing back and forth and really almost all cooing completely. Other

than that I felt that she wasnt making good eye contact but I dont think that

anymore. She seems to make really good eye contact but it usually isnt for very

long. She seems to be very busy trying to take everything in.

LOL...I guess I was so busy getting ready to go on my trip I forgot to tell

anyone. :P Alec was incredible! He was so direct in his speaking. I wish I could

have heard him or seen it but I wasnt there. He did it with Jeff. :( But he

seems to have started speaking more again. This is good. :D

As for Yessenia, I am still in a little bit of shock. I dont know if I really

feel that this dr is accurate about Yessenia as I disagree with some of the

sensory things she said Yessenia has. But I could just be in denial although it

really isnt like me to be so. The dr was talking about ST to help train

yessenia's mouth muscles to help her to babble. She also thought OT would help

with sensory issues.
