I am proud to say I work for a fire department that runs EMS. We have 5

fire houses with three of them running medic units. I can say that the

citzens in our city get the best EMS service money can provide. We have

low turn over and GREAT CITIZEN SUPPORT!!! It might be time for Fort

Worth and a few other cities to come out of the stone age and look at a

few of their nieghbors and see how things are done. All MEDSTAR has

been is a gaint band-aid.

Yeah, it looks like Fort Worth's system has some problems. But my

question to you is if you are providing the " best EMS service money

can provide " why are you only staffing 3 of your 5 stations with

ambulances?

It appears that EMS is a lower priority in your city than fire is.

Because the method that department uses to provide ambulance coverage tells them

that 3 medic units is appropriate for call volume and territory covered...of

course, this is an FD so even though it is SSM, we can't call it that...so its

just some random chance they decided upon based upon nothing to do with the

number and type of EMS calls they?respond to?across an area that no way ties to

the location and area they cover.

Well, I dont agree with that this post. I dont agree that EMS needs to be

intergrated with Fire services. Personally I want to be a Paramedic, not a

fireman, so why would I do so. Anyway there are plenty of Private services

providing EXCELLENT emergency and non emergent services in the United States.

Allbeit known I cant say how MEDSTAR runs its business, I know you cant just

make a statement of such generalism in reguards to private ambulance services.

I personally feel that is an ignorant point of view. This is my own humble

opinion. I can also say from my own personal experiance that there are some

fire departments who run ems services that are in the stone age themselves and

citizens are DISGUSTED with the service provided. So Fire departments can be in

the same bad service offering organizations as some private services.

FD station coverage in most cities is determined by ISO ratings, which

determine Home insurance rates. Maybe if health ins rates were determined by

ambulance coverage, we could see lower rates and more ambulances. IMHO,

there needs to be a " Medic " in every station..

Ahhh...the elusive ISO rating...exactly how does and ISO rating of 3 determine

where fire stations should be in my city of 26 square miles?? What about an ISO

of 4?? An ISO of 3 and the station has to be on the corner of Main and 2nd

Street, but an ISO of 4 and we can place it at Main and 4th?

BTW, does the savings in insurance costs between an ISO of 4 and 2 put more cash

in the hands of homeowners and businesses (through lower insurance costs)?than

the increased costs of facilities, equipment and personnel required to drop this

number by 2?(through increased taxes)?

Dudley

PS: Even when " ISO " determines the locations of the stations...its still SSM...
