home-made tube feeding

yes! We have been doing it for years...

Here's a reprint I wrote a coupleof years back:

I make it using a " Vitamix " blender (www.vitamix.com) With that blender, you

can put lots of good food in without having to water it down too much, as it

is very powerful (Baskin Robbins uses them!) Now, you can probably use a

regular blender, but if you want to get meat in there, you have to water it

down a LOT if the blender will even do it. The Vitamix was expensive but is

worth it - we have had ours for years!

I just put in veggies (anything you can think of), fruit (same goes, any

fruit), meat (mostly chicken or pork as beef tends to be really stiff

drawing it up the tube) or fish (lots of salmon, but trout, tuna, haddock,

pollock, as well), and olive oil. I also add some supplements I feel help

her: ground flax seed, acidophilus, and calcium & Vitamin D (as per her

pediatrician, Dr. Blake). We " top it off " with a few cans of pediasure. If

it needs a bit of extra fluid, we'll drop a bit of pulpy orange juice in.

I know, it sounds like a lot, but it's really not, we've got it down to a

science (?) ha ha and once you get used to it, it's no big deal. We usually

make enough for 2 lunches & 2 suppers from that, so we make it every couple

of days. You could use your own formula just as a 'topping off' for the

food you use.

Introduce new foods just as you would a baby, only one at a time if they've

never had it to check for allergies. Now, sometimes we DO cheat if we're in

a hurry, etc and we'll throw in a can (gasp!) of Chunky chicken soup and a

banana and call that lunch but most of the time, it's whole food, or if

we're travelling we just buy baby food sometimes and mix it up with formula

in a shaker bottle so we don't have to lug the Vitamix. She has also had

leftover lasagnas, casseroles, etc - I put pretty much anything into her,

but prefer the meat, veggie, fruit, oil & supplement routine...

Please check with your child's doctor and dietician before going ahead on

this, I'm not a doctor, just a bit adventurous! I still believe Kennedy

will eat (she wants her medicine in her mouth now!) so I wanted her body to

be used to processing all different foods, not just one specific formula if

and when the day comes. Every so often (maybe once a year now as she grows)

I will call the dietician with a " usual " mix up of the food and how many

meals it lasts and she plugs it into the computer to see what we're

missing. Recently, I discovered she was pretty low on fat, so we upped the

olive oil and that brought everything up to snuff. It's important to keep a

check on things as they grow.

Hope this helps!

Just a point of clarification as you're new: Kennedy is G tube fed; I'm not

sure how this would go over with a j tube. She gets a " breakfast " , " lunch " ,

and " supper " in bolus feeds via a g tube,

Yes,

Amita is oral now but we did something similar to lisa's method and

basically gave her the food that we ate through her g-tube. I am not

sure what is a j-tube or how this method would work with one. Talk

to a nurse/doctor before you try anything. We have Amita even now on

a very very restricted diet since she is allergic to

a endless array of foods. she still has the g-tube as a back up just

in case.

Hi ! Thanks so much for the answer. I have to tell you that your

website on little Kennedy was the first thing I came across when I

found out that my son, Aiden, has CHARGE. It was so helpful to me and

I was inspired by you and your family!

Anyway, Aiden is one year old now and has been fed breastmilk

fortified with enfamil through his j-tube for the past year. We are

switching him onto big-boy food now but I was shocked and disappointed

when it (nutren jr) arrived...one of the biggest components of it was

sugar. Since this is going to be his only source of nutrition, I was

hoping there were more options out there. I spoke with Aiden's

nutritionist today and she recommended trying Compleat pediatric

blenderized formula which is amde from real food. With making

homemade food, the nutritionist was concerned about clogging the tube

since he is on continuous feeds. I am just going to have to do some

experimenting with consistencies until I find the right one before

trying it. Thanks again for the help! Beth

Compleat is a good first step for sure. Glad you saw the web site - we

couldn't really find much when K was born. I wondered about putting the

food through a j tube - but at least Compleat is real food, better than

nothing! Is there any talk of him going to a gtube sometime in the future?

Hey there!

We just put through our order for a Vitamix mixer. One piece of info

that will help you save money. If you can get your Dr. to write a

letter or script saying that your child is strictly g-tube fed then you

get one for $270. This is a reconditioned Super 5000 (without the dry

canister, but that can be purchased additionally). I've also heard

nothing but great things about this product. We haven't started giving

Wyatt anything but Pediasure, but I'm anxious to get started. We hunt

so the only meat we eat is wild game, and chicken (we have chickens,

too). I'm hoping that this new diet will help him grow and thrive much

more so than the pediasure.

I would love to chat with y'all more about different recipes and

such. Feel free to write me at wendyemond@....

I used to make erikas food from natural foods, blend in blender etc. It was

such a pain, the fish would always get stuck in the tube, in order to get it

thin enough to pass iw ould have to add so much water. i finally gave up

and only do fruits. What i have done is added lots and lots of natural vitamin

supplements (omega 3,6,9, psp+ glyconutrients, Dr foster's greens, juice

plus, encell, inflamax, img2000! also, i switched her to Soy bright beginings

3x/day. This has really decreased her secretions.
