Guest guest
It might be organo or splenomegaly. I hear that a lot of time and they say it jumbled all together and it sounds like one word. Just my thoughts. Made up word? > Doc dictates " organosplenomegaly " . It's not in Stedman's. Did she make it up? > > >
Guest guest
Thanks, . I have splenomegaly, organomegaly and hepatosplenomegaly but that one threw me. Guest guest
I did have several Internal Medicine docs that would actually dictate organosplenomegaly... however, it isn't in my Stedman spellchecker either, and do believe that it is one of those glorious words that docs LOVE to create. I had actually contacted the doc on this, and this is what he wanted me to type. I suppose it is one of those " physician preference " phrases. I am not saying it is a true word, but just that I had a group want me to use the phrase.... Bobbie. -- Made up word? Doc dictates " organosplenomegaly " . It's not in Stedman's. Did she make it up? Guest guest
Actually, my internists do this all the time, too - it's as though they don't consider the spleen an organ or something ;-) I would type it as organosplenomegaly if that is clearly what she's saying. Even though WE all know its NOT a real word ;-) Janet P.S. Interestingly, I have Stedman's Spellchecker on my 'puter and it wanted me to change " organosplenomegaly " " organ splenomegaly " Re: Made up word? Thanks, . Guest guest
I don't think its actually a word that is made up, maybe its just not used often enough that it's been heard.....that's why with medical terminology there are word roots and combining forms, but docs do make it interesting!! c -- Made up word? Guest guest
I have docs who use organosplenomegaly all the time and I never could document it. My accounts are verbatum, so I just type it. Guest guest
Likely it is one of those constructions that doctors think " ought " to be a word. Organomegaly means " enlargement of an organ. " Splenomegaly means " enlargement of the spleen. " If one is referring to enlargement of the spleen, organomegaly and splenomegaly are interchangeable. Of course, organomegaly can also refer to enlargement of other organs and splenomegaly refers strictly to the spleen. Interestingly, I got a single Google hit on " organosplenomegaly. " Usually, there are numerous hits on even made-up words if they're in common usage. For example, " irregardless " got 40K hits, not including the Irregardless Cafe in Raleigh. I couldn't think of a common made-up medical word to try, but in the past when I've had a " live " one, they always got several hits. Not " organosplenomegaly, " though. It got one, on a site in India.
