Guest guest
Okay, I do so good on the plan until a certain hormonal time of the month. Then I feel desperate, out of control, get the " screw it " attitude, and it is all too easy to eat until I make myself sick. At least I have been accounting for the points, but this trips me up every month. How do I deal with this? I try to keep busy, keep low point food around, etc. I really think the hormone surge makes me hungrier. Any advice? I think exercise may help, and this is my new plan of attack. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated. thanks, friends, Crystal

Guest guest
You just don't do it. It is, honestly, as simple as that. You know it's going to happen each month so well before, you plan it out. You play out the scenario in your head. You ensure that you have plenty of healthy, low point snacks around the house. You tell yourself, " There is no such thing as off program " and you stick to that. Honestly while the hormones may have a small impact on your hunger, the hormones that are higher during this time of the month are not overtly related to hunger. I think most of it is in our heads. For example, I have not had normal cycles for two years. This month, out of the blue, I got one. I had zero food issues. A few years ago I would have been anticipating that it was coming, and probably convinced myself that I was even more hungry than I really was. But because I had no idea it was coming I didn't have those " issues " that we all (well all we women) have each month. So start now with the planning and self talk. Tell yourself that there is no reason for you to be more hungry before your cycle. Be firm with yourself the same way you would with a spoiled child who was stamping her feet and saying " But I WANT my own way! " The thing is, we all do! I mean who didn't see the movie " Defending Your Life " and hear that you could eat anything you want and never gain weight and groan, " Now THAT would be heaven! " But sometimes we have to take our spoiled inner child in hand and say " Grow up and act like an adult. You don't need all those sweets! " After all, thin women have had periods for years without eating the paper off the walls. If they can do it, we can too. Guest guest
Well I disagree with the fact that it's all in our heads. It took me three months and reviewing my journal to realize the pattern of hunger before my periods. I would get just like Chrystal said, starving, desperate, and almost of control. I usually managed to stay on plan thanks to banking my points. I would be going along smoothly and then all of a sudden I couldn't get enough to eat and I constantly had the munchies. It wasn't till I looked back through my journals and noticed the same thing happened every month about a week before my period. Once my period started I had no problem getting back on track and wasn't constantly starving. I also remembered that our high school sex-ed teacher had told us that when you get hormonal and crave chocolate the best thing to do is avoid it and eat lots of protein. Red meat I believe is actually what she told us. So I started making sure to avoid having chocolate in the house around that time and made sure to have lots of high protein foods. A friend of mine has the same thing happen to her only she goes through it the week after her period. She hadn't thought about it either till she was struggling to stay on plan and I asked if it was that time of month. That's when she realized it was always happening to her the week after her period. I think it's great that you don't have that problem but that doesn't mean the rest of us don't. I do agree though that you need to deal with the problem and not let it throw you off plan or use it as an excuse to binge every month. Guest guest
This is exactly what I experience! Just knowing that there's a pattern will help me, I'm sure. I just need to pay attention to my BC pills, and when " the week " is arriving make sure to stay focused, active, and drink lots of water. I will definitely try the protein solution, too. Thanks for validating my feelings! I did much better last night, and will try to continue to stay aware the rest of this difficult week. Guest guest
Kris You seemed to somehow take that post personally, and it certainly wasn't intended to be. I said " MOSTLY " in our heads. There are a lot of subconscious things going on in our heads at all times that we're not even aware of. That said, it wasn't intended to upset anyone but to give the original poster something to think about. I do understand that we all have issues that are our own, but I think if we let them become excuses it's easier to say " Oh, well it's because of... " fill in the blank. I didn't mean to imply that no one had a problem dealing with food before/after/during their period. Sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to. Guest guest
No offense taken. It just sounded to me like you were saying the whole craving thing and having issues during that time of the month was all in ones head. I agree that it can be a bigger problem if you make it so, or it can make a good excuse if you are looking for one. I just took it like someone saying " I don't have cramps during my period so if you have them it's probably all in your head " . I was just trying to make it clear that our bodies are all different and we all struggle with different problems. Interesting side note...I never did have cramps till after I gave birth and had gained a lot of weight. After having a baby things changed and it wasn't for the better. I know now that most of it was weight related (or diet related) because after I lost most of my weight things went back to normal. I'm not sure if it was a result of eating healthier foods or just less strain on my body or maybe both. I asked my doctor when my periods became more severe and she said " Well sometimes things change after you have a baby " I'm glad it was diet/weight related because now I know that by keeping my weight under control I can keep that under control as well. Probably way more information than anyone wanted to know!!
