The researchers suspect it's because the horizontal eye movements cause the two hemispheres of the brain to interact more, and communication between the left and right brain hemispheres is known to help us remember certain things. The researchers aren't sure whether the eye movements will help people in their daily lives ... but it's certainly worth a try the next time you've misplaced your keys or forgotten your grocery list at home!LiveScience.com April 25, 2007Related Articles:Deep Sleep Solidifies Your MemoryTeach Your Memory How to RememberBoost Your Memory with Magnesium (30Comments) +20 Points BYPhantom O' BanjoView Phantom O' Banjo's Profile Add Phantom O' Banjo to FriendsReceive Updates from Phantom O' Banjo By News Feed April 27, 2007I was taught to never trust a person with shifty eyes....... NLP talks about eye movements -- up is visual, horizontal is audio and down is tactile (kinesthetic). Eyes left is accessing audio-recall. Noted that this experiment was done with the spoken word (sound). If done with visual presentation of words it wouldn't have worked (unless they had people look UP and side to side) -Mumby View Sub Comments +1 Points BYdocpoehlmannView docpoehlmann's Profile Add docpoehlmann to FriendsReceive Updates from docpoehlmann By News Feed May 13, 2007For a more detailed explanation read Grunwald's book: EyebodyISBN 1-877338-41-9 -6 Points BYRogwayView Rogway's Profile Add Rogway to FriendsReceive Updates from Rogway By News Feed May 12, 2007Horizontal for sound has to be true. It happened to me. One night while turning from my driveway heading to town for some stuff before the store closed, i said outloud, i wish i knew what the powerball number was going to be. At that exact moment, something caught the corner of my eye and i glanced (horizontally) at it real quick, and a voice said NUMBER 4. I thought about it all the way to town. I bought a powerball ticket, picked the first 5 numbers, picked number 4 for powerball. Two days later i turned in my ticket and guess what, i won $3.00 because the powerball was number 4. Wow, if only i had said i wished for the other 5 numbers to go with it. Only 64 million that night. And for those who has never heard a voice talk to them, then i guess they have never had a dream where they hear someone talk. You see, that lets me off the hook as being crazy. But we all must remember a man's famous phrase over two thousand years ago--this is only for those who are willing to accept it. Those who have eyes let them see, and those who have ears let them hear! +5 Points BYGHView GH's Profile Add GH to FriendsReceive Updates from GH By News Feed May 12, 2007See Brain Gym (www.braingym.org). I believe the purpose of the gamut procedurewas to access memory in different visual fields.A nice benefit-I am not using my bifocals at the computer and if I tap onan issue I seem to be able to think through it much clearer. +4 Points BYGregB777View GregB777's Profile Add GregB777 to FriendsReceive Updates from GregB777 By News Feed May 12, 2007This sounds entirely plausible. It also sounds very similar to EMDR. My experience with EMDR is that it also WORKS.If you notice, this type of eye movement is very similar to what happens during REM sleep spontaneously--- it's actually CALLED Rapid Eye Movement sleep. There is some evidence that REM sleep helps memory consolidation--- ie it helps you remember better when you get enough REM sleep. Here's a link:http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb/neuro/neuro98/202s98-paper2/2.htmlSeems to me that, for whatever reason, moving the eyes in this way actually helps you remember things better---whether you are awake or sleeping when you do it!! +4 Points BYRogwayView Rogway's Profile Add Rogway to FriendsReceive Updates from Rogway By News Feed May 12, 2007Of corse it's true; does Eye movement help your two brains, or does it just stop one brain for a split second? We all know, among other things including rapid eye movement, that it gets your concious brain (left hemisphere) off of analizing the world and everything in it, especially what someone else is doing, thus, allowing your (right hemisphere) to actually do a little work for you such as giving a little hint about yourself and your capabilities. After all, remember what Jesus said-when your inner becomes your outer, and your outer becomes your inner, you will become one and you will know yourself. Who would you rather know, yourself, or someone else. Your left brain analizes everything else, but your right brain analizes yourself. Can you handle that. Most people I chat with about this subject gets mad because they actually see a little bit about themselves. The truth. That's when they find out that just believing something to be true, is a world apart from knowing it to be true for a fact. Most of them don't want it. Try it, lay down close your eyes and relax and get your mind off of the world and look at nothng, you just might be amazed at what you see. Keep up the good work Dr. Mercola. I am on your side. I later learned from a counselor that this is how the eye-movement therapy got started - by self-observation. Lots of people do it naturally and she systematized it. Now it's different. Just yesterday, I noticed during self-conscious trauma that I shook my head vigorously, as if to shake it out of my head - but my eyes stay fixed on one point! Same eye movement this way, but more rapid and more energetic and effective. Also, it doesn't get me dizzy, which may be why I instinctively switched to this way. +3 Points BYKatybr55View Katybr55's Profile Add Katybr55 to FriendsReceive Updates from Katybr55 By News Feed May 12, 2007Witchy, Huh?Katy B. +4 Points BYFreedomView Freedom's Profile Add Freedom to FriendsReceive Updates from Freedom By News Feed April 28, 2007Somebody is pulling our leg, me thinks. +3 Points BYVicki MarieView Vicki Marie's Profile Add Vicki Marie to FriendsReceive Updates from Vicki Marie By News Feed May 15, 2007I tried moving my eyes back and forth for 30 seconds and found myself getting queasy. If one doesn't do the eye movement regimen, their brain is in some other state, probably induced by the experimental setting. +2 Points BYsaynotoquacksView saynotoquacks's Profile Add saynotoquacks to FriendsReceive Updates from saynotoquacks By News Feed April 28, 2007 If this is true, it may be because mentally focussing on your temporal lobes may stimulate them. I meditate, and when I do I focus on my brow point (third eye) and chant a mantra and imagine it moving into the top of my head and out my brow point. This makes me feel so much better, so much more relaxed, and I'm a recovering psychiatric victim! I read that this type of meditation stimulates the pituitary gland, which is located in the area near the brow point. So by focussing mentally on that mental area, you can stimulate that gland. Maybe by focussing on where the temporal lobes are, you can stimulate them to action! I will be trying this a lot now, since those psychiatric drugs have wrought havoc on my memory! BYeyesguyView eyesguy's Profile Add eyesguy to FriendsReceive Updates from eyesguy By News Feed May 14, 2007This is one more reason to use some form of vision therapy that works for you. Corrective eyeware tends to put the eyes into staring mode which eliminates natural movement of the eyes. The program offered at mercola.com sounds excellent, but I had already eliminated most of my refractive error with another program. BYmelbyView melby's Profile Add melby to FriendsReceive Updates from melby By News Feed May 13, 2007this article makes perfect sense, as the connection between left and right brain occurs in eft (rolling eyes up, down, in circle to left, then right, open, close) and other variants in nlp and emdr. the interesting thing is that it specifically cites moving left to right, rather than up and down. Visualize that! (See my other post for proper context.)No, really, this may make sense. Bates methods sense eye musles are tensed in unfavorable way. Your training may help by ultimately alowing the muscles to find a new relaxed state - like stretching exercises maybe! But you know, sometimes i can't even find myself.saynotoquacks, one time i had the opportunity to sit before two of those P-sy-chaiatry fellers and if i knew about the rapid eye movement then i could have glanced back and forth at them real fast and that would have allowed me to remember to ask them if they would just take out my brain and lay it on the table and take it apart and show me just exactly what was wrong with it and how they would for sure fix it, then i just might have went back for another session. But as i look back, i see the only difference is, other than their past study cases, they have a plaque (get it, plaque) on the wall that allows them to pry and i don't.You know i often wonder, is it easier to forget what it was that i forgot, or, is it easier to try to remember what it was that i want to forget. Seems like i forgot something. Oh yea, i remember, i forgot to...Terms of ServiceCurrent NewsletterContact Info©Copyright 2006 Dr. ph Mercola. All Rights Reserved.
