Guest guest
Hi, Does this sentence need correction? The patient was also referred to Dr. xxx who took him " off " enalapril because of the cough. Should it be " of off enalapril? " or is it okay? Guest guest
Thanks Jan, I was wondering about that. I have a tendency to put " that " where they don't belong and I actually got two spell checks yesterday saying it needed a 'that' which doc did not dictate. I am always in need of refreshing my grammar. I can't believe how dumb I am in the language arts.. Aliceanne At 09:09 AM 7/12/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Depends on what the doc says. Guest guest
Depends on what the doc says. If he says the I'd put the. If he doesn't say it, I wouldn't. Jan jantranscribes@... Guest guest
Always use the MS Word grammar checker as a GUIDE only. It is just a program, and it's not always right. off of? > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > Does this sentence need correction? > > > > The patient was also referred to Dr. xxx who took him " off " enalapril > > > > because of the cough. > > > > Should it be " of off enalapril? Guest guest
Jan, Could you share with me the authority you're quoting for " off of " being incorrect? I have always understood that the " of " is an unnecessary preposition and can--or perhaps should--be omitted. However, other than writers of British English preferring to omit it and writers of American English often preferring to include it, I am unaware that there is a rule stating that " of " is incorrect in the phrase, " off of. Guest guest
Valeria: I just always remembered that rule from high school grammar and I didn't really have a source other than that, but luckily Pam quoted from BOS p. 292 where it states off of is incorrect. I'm very glad I have a reference now Jan jantranscribes@... " Typing is my life. " " Whoever signs the paycheck makes the rules. " off of? > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > Does this sentence need correction? > > > > The patient was also referred to Dr. xxx who took him " off " enalapril > > > > because of the cough. > > > > Should it be " of off enalapril?
