Guest guest
My daughter, 's curve has gotten worse in the last year, after her hip surgery - July it was 37 degrees! we go back to orthopedists on Wednesday of this week for another x-ray, scanogram and bone age. He says it is positional and secondary to her hypotonia. We are praying she will not need spine surgery. We tried wearing the brace at night, but she did not tolerate it and her breathing was difficult. Her orthopedist says her continued physical therapy is the best. If i recall an 18 degree curve is not that bad. 's was 26 last year and he watched it but was not that concerned. Does your receive PT? Guest guest
Hi all, Well, I have a few questions again. First, did I tell you 's sleep study was normal. Good for us, right? We just have a child who wakes at 4 am for the day. And occasionally (ok, not often) has times where she wakes evey hour - Super! So, My question is does melatonin help people fall asleep or stay asleep? I read the article you forwarded, . Interesting information. We do many of the recommendations. Our pediatrician suggested over the counter melatonin. can begins to lose steam before the end of her school day. It is beginning to interfere with school. So I'm just looking for some thoughts. Also, she had a scoliosis x-ray where they determine her to have an 18 degree curvature. I've done some reading and we are scheduled to see an orthopedist in Dec. I just thought I'd ask you all for your experiences with scoliosis. I know I have read some of your posts in the past, I was just dealing with other issues at the time!! What are we in for? How bad is an 18 degree curvature and will it progress? I have thought about hippo therapy but is allergic to animals and is afraid of horses. How do I get around that one? (We do give OTC Clariten if we are visiting anyone with dogs and that helps!) OK...that about does it for me. Thanks for your insight and experiences!! I really appreciate them!! Guest guest
We've used/use Melatonin to get to sleep for quite awhile but have added Trazodone (sp) to maintain the sleep. I don't know what signals real worry with scoliosis. I don't even know 's degree. However, I was lucky enough to have grown up next door to one of the best regarded orthopods in the country; he was downright famous. When was young, I called who told me not to let a surgeon touch her until I had 3 (that's THREE) opinions --- and he had us going to MN and I don't know where else. has died and was positively ancient, but my brother said that even into his 80's and 90's Tulane called him in to observe and help with complicated cases. Perhaps things have changed now ( is 22), but this was our experience. , by the way, is fine in regard to her back. Martha

Guest guest
You know, Ellen, I think a lot of parents have a great deal of trouble getting second, etc. opinions. I understand the bother and even the emotional drain, but I agree with you. If you have drs who're working together for you, you're truly fortunate. Guest guest
Colleen- Aubrie has about the same curvature - 18-22 degrees. They're going to monitor it every 6 months now, I think. In the past 4 months, it decreased a few degrees. Not knowing the +/- factor in the measurement, I wouldn't think it was a considerable decline - more like a break even. She is riding horses once/week and I hope it helps. I know it can't hurt! And she has PT twice a week that focuses on that as well as her hip strength and stability. I am concerned as well about what the future will bring. Aubrie already has a hip brace. I sort of hope the hip brace is helping her to sit straighter than without it. Wouldn't it be nice if it had some extra benefits? We don't really want to add a back brace too! We haven't gotten Aubrie's sleep results back yet. Aubrie doesn't wake during the night so much - she wakes, but goes back to sleep or at least tries to. But she definitely looses steam during the day. She has the opportunity for a nap mid-day but usually chooses not to - doesn't want to miss anything. Rarely, she'll fall asleep on the ride home from school. But her bedtime is 7:30pm and she'll sometimes fall asleep before that. Makes for a short evening for a 3rd grader. Again - we're finding ourselves in similar situations and with similar questions. No answers - but at least we're in this together. Michele W Aubrie's mom
Guest guest
Colleen Just a quick reply - I'm at work but had scoliosis but this disappeared with sacral cranial osteopathy. Simon
Guest guest
Hi Ellen, Martha and Cathy, Thank you all for your insights and experiences. does recieve PT and she was recently reevaluated for OT. I will definitely keep in mind the advice for more than one opinion. I appreciate you and your quick response!! Colleen > > > > Hi all, > > > > Well, I have a few questions again. Guest guest
, I continue to be in awe at how similar and Aubrie are!! Thank you for your experiences. We will continue with PT and keep her PT up to date with our doctor's information. We have a friend who makes 's orthodics and can make her a brace if or when it's needed. He even makes house calls for us!! If he needs to make something, he is going to incorporate protection for her belly as one of her kidneys is located in her abdominal area. This way she can participate more in gym with her class. and Aubrie are on the same sleep schedule it seems too!! I'll look forward to hearing her study results and what recommendations your doctors have for Aubrie!! Thanks again!! Colleen > > Colleen- > > Aubrie has about the same curvature - 18-22 degrees.
