I cant recall if I already asked, I meant to, but anyway,

WHY does the basal temperature have to be under the arm? What is wrong with shoving in the mouth which is much faster?

When I wake up I dont have 10mins, I struggle with three as I usually need the loo, couldnt that "holding it back" raise the temperature too? (laughing with crossed legs)

Oral temp on waking but still laying down is 36.1 for me. (just starting out on treatment 25mcg levothyroxine so low dose because of heart history)

Personally I prefer under tongue.. it's faster and more accurate...

Underarm temp, for some folks, can be off as much as one degree.

... and yep.. if you're bouncing on the bed and crossing your legs holding out for the morning potty run.. it's gonna throw of the temp reading! hehehehe

A low dose to start is good, in my opinion.. gives the body a chance to adjust.. less stress on heart and adrenals.. but can be really really hard when you are impatient to feel well!

I'm not good with temp conversions.. I'll let those that know jump in with that!

My temps swing wildly, which I have read over and over is more indicative of

swinging adrenal fatigue, rather than thyroid, at least, for me, at THIS

point in time. Dr. Lowe, I believe, also states this as being an indicator.

My temp, in the last few months, has been as low as 95.6, axillary (one time

in the morning), then went all the way up to almost 99 after being up for an

hour, then back down to 97 sometime in the afternoon, then back up to 98 in

the evening. It is MUCH improved from what it used to be, but still does

this swinging thing periodically. I have even suspected my one little ovary

of actually working now and then, even though it's been without a good blood

supply for the last 20 or so yrs (tubil, then hyst). You'd think it would

be completely burned out by now. Yes, the ovaries and cycle do have to be

considered here, because, at ovulation, we run a higher body temp. It would

be amazing that mine would still work at all, but maybe so.........I

consider adrenal fatigue, waning and waxing (some improvement there over

yrs) to be mostly the culprit though, for me.

Hi ASll,

Isn't measuring temp anal the quickist and most accurate?

My mouth temp is always lower than my anal temp. I don't bother with

the underarm at all. Takes too long. Anal is one to two minutes and

done.

Could very well be.. but for some of us that's not an option...

physically I could maneuver to do it now.. but for quite a long time I

was too stiff and sore to have gotten things 'aimed' correctly.

The more that you physically move around, even just sitting up in bed

causes muscle movement which in turn creates heat... that increases the

temp, every so slightly, yes.. but enough to make it a variable and cause

the temps to be inconsistent.

To reach and then just slide it under the tongue then becomes the most

accurate with the least movement.

And doesn't the temperature differ in different parts of the body ? That

could make a difference, too.

Temp taken axillary (under arm) is one degree lower, approximately, so add a

degree when you take it there. Temp when taken rectally should have a

degree taken away from it, approximately. Oral temp is actually the closest

to actual body temp, providing you haven't eaten or drank anything for about

15 to 20 minutes or so. Funny thing is that my axillary temp is always only

1/2 degree lower than my oral temp. Anyway, these are rules of thumb for

taking temps. This I am trained in for the last past 20 yrs or even more,

because my mom was also a nurse. I am a CNA, which is not legally a nurse,

but for all practical purposes in THIS crazy medical world today, is very

very close, when it comes to a LOT of stuff.. So, lol, I feel very

confident when I'm talking about this particular thing. I don't know where

some get that the AXILLARY temp should be 98 anything because it just isn't

so. That would mean that that person would be running around a 99 or higher

temp, in some cases. Ovulation that is normal would cause a temp rise

during a short period of time during the month, but then it should go away,

back down to normal.
