Guest guest
Hi Cole, Check here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/patent-ductus-arteriosus/DS00631 Also, in slang terms a " pda " is a public display of affection and to my hubby, the geek, it's a personal digital assistant! I'm assuming you meant the heart thing, though! From what I know PDA is the most common heart defect. http://www.chargesyndrome.info > > can anyone out there explain to me exactly what a pda is? > thanks > Cole > >
Guest guest
PDA stands for " patent ductus arteriosis. " The ductus arteriosis is sort of a natural shunt(passage) between the aorta and the pulmonary arteries (whihc carry blood from the herat to the lungs). Before a baby is born, not all of the blood needs to go to the lungs, because the oxygen is supplied by the mom (via the placenta). The ductus shunts some of the blood (which the heart is pumpng to the lungs) directly to the aorta and the body. After a baby is born, the ducuts is supposed to close (within hours to days, normally). Sometimes, babies are give prostoglandins to keep it open longer (to provide needed circulation when there are other heart defects present, and/or to buy time before doing surgery to put in an artificial shunt). If it doesn't close on it's own, it is " patent " or open still, thus PDA. Guest guest
Cole, PDA stands for patent ductus arteriosus. It's when the ductus arteriosus, a blood vessel in the heart, doesn't close on its own, as it does in most babies. Here's a good website with more info: http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/heart-encyclopedia/anomalies/pda.htm They gave our daughter's PDA three years to close up on its own, and when it didn't, the cardiologist closed it last year via heart catheterization. Hope this helps! , mom to (4) http://kauffmanlak.blogspot.com/ --------------------------------- We have the perfect Group for you. Check out the handy changes to Yahoo! Groups. Guest guest
My daughter had a PDA and it was quick surgery to clamp it closed. She was home in 3 days they just went between her ribs under her arm pit to clamp it.
