From the past:

Guy who worked for an unnamed private company many….many….many years ago in

Austin, Texas. We all wore those “smocks” in light blue favored then by a

variety of occupations, pharmacists, barbers, etc. The EMT got off work,

forgot he was wearing his fashionable blue smock, went into a “Stop & Rob”

and ordered a six-pack. Cashier asked, “getting off or going on?” EMT

replied, indignantly, “getting off of course!” Cashier smiled and replied,

“Yeah, just try to drink that and then cut hair.”

p.s. rumor has it GG still sleeps in one.

Do we need to put a striped pole on the ambulance besides the Star of Life?

I wish I still had the one we wore. It would be nice for my biographer to

have.

Actually, Doc Krin, beg to differ. British surgeons are called " Mister "

because of the Royal Navy's practice (subsequently carried over to the US Navy)

of calling junior officers " Mister. " As the ship's surgeon was usually a

lieutenant....

Yeah, I tried as hard as I could to drive to an early grave when I worked

for him.

Obviously didn’t try hard enough…:-)

Odd..my understanding is that it dates to the barber surgeon verses the 'real

medical doctor' dichotomy that held sway in Britain for many many years...

I'll see if I can find a reference for you...but there have been several Brit

surgeons I've worked with in the past who told me that was the reason.

and back in the Napoleonic era, when that sort of thing was started, the Ship's

Surgeon wasn't even a 'real' officer, but a Warrant Officer (like the Sailing

Master, the Carpenter, and often the Bosun)...not in the line of command at

all...
