Guest guest
Endocrinology: Natural thyroid hormone for hypothyroidism ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Question: " Is there any evidence for using natural desiccated thyroid hormone for treatment of hypothyroidism? Are there any advantages or drawbacks in using this compared to thyroxine? " queries DANIEL DODEK, MD, of Vancouver, BC. Answer: I don't have any experience using this medication, which contains thyroxine and triiodothyronine (T[subscript 3]). It's derived from porcine thyroids, and I find most patients are reluctant to use animal products these days. For patients who aren't feeling normal on thyroxine, you could add a small dose of T[subscript3]. We usually try cutting the dose of thyroxine by 50 ug and adding 12.5 ug of T [subscript 3]. My experience with this regimen is that patients are evenly split between those feeling better, the same and worse. HL [Reference: N Engl J Med 1999; 340:424-29.] I posted this at the natural thyroid hormone forum, but I guess they kicked me out. I dissagreed with one of their main folks over there once... guess you need to shut up or get out on that forum.
