Guest guest
Hello eveyone, I count myself very lucky that I have not had any close friends or family members touched by breast cancer. I tried researching on several web sites but I do have a few specific questions. I hope that some of you will help me by answering them. My questions have to do with chemo and radiation. I know it is an individual plan for each patient but I am trying to get an " average " . How long did you have chemo or radiation. Does it start right after surgery? How long do you feel too ill to work? I have heard that pateints experience lots of nausea with chemo but I don't know anything about side effects of radiation. Thank you for your help. God bless all of you. I'll be praying for all the members. Diane
Guest guest
Welcome to the group Diane. I had my surgery and chemo in 1990. I had 6 mo of chemo. I had 5fu and Methotrexate the first two Tues. of each mo. then the third week I took Cytoxan pills and rested the 4th week. This went on for 6 mo. I didn't have radiation. My chemo started about a week after my surgery. I never got sick. I just had a tiny bit of nausea and that was taken care of with the Compazine. I would be home the day of chemo and the next day and go back to work for Thurs and Fri. Guest guest
I had 4 treatments of A/C (every two weeks). I had to wait 2 months after surgery because my incision became infected. I was not working at the time, which was a blessing. I would get sick the 2nd day after the treatment and the first treatment took me 10 days to get over. The last treatment took me almost 3 weeks. I did not have radiation treatment. new member: questions for research Hello eveyone, I count myself very lucky that I have not had any close friends or family members touched by breast cancer. Guest guest
Welcome to our group... The first thing you must realize is that everyone and every treatment is different, but I had the same questions 2 months ago myself. I am having my chemo treatments first...A/C every 3 weeks for 4 cycles (just finished #3 last Friday, and the tumor has shrunk from 5 cm. to about 3 cm.), then I will switch to Taxol/Herceptin, which will be weekly for 12 weeks. The Herceptin will go on for another year. Sometime in early June, I'll have surgery. Even though the tumor is only in my right breast, I will have the left " deconstructed " to match the right (whatever the dr. decides...lumpectomy or mastectomy). I'm 53, and boobs just don't mean the same thing they did when I was 23! Then it will be on to radiation, probably 30 sessions over a 6 week period. Nausea has been well-controlled with Emend and whatever other little chemicals get dumped in my IV. I feel " yucky " for about 4 days and want to sleep a lot. Then I semi-bounce back for about another 4 days, and then everything is great until the next treatment. My biggest " problem " has been constipation!!! Can't emphasize enough doing whatever you can to avoid it, but there you are....the whole process can't be wonderful, right? Then my " gut " slingshots the other way and I have diarrhea.....double YUCK!!! Working...I'm an elementary school speech therapist, and except for the Fridays when I have treatments and the following Mondays when I sleep all day, I've been going to work. Sure, there are some days that I go in late (due to the previously mentioned diarrhea), and during that first week after treatment when I might leave early because I'm just exhausted. My oncologist is pleased (and somewhat surprised) that I do continue to work. I told him that while my family is my main support, my work family is just amazing (with 5 " survivors " in the ranks). I would go absolutely nuts if I stayed at home by myself. Hope this answers some of your questions, Lucinda in sunny (yeah!!) Guest guest
Hi, Lucinda, I've had a learning curve on the constipation/gas/diarrhea thing myself. Seems I need to take 2 Senokot-S starting the night of chemo day and then for 2 - 3 days after, but then it's time to stop or I go into gas/diarrhea. We'll have this all figured out by the time it's over! Ellie Lucinda wrote: My biggest " problem " has been constipation!!! Guest guest
Hi Diane, I had 4 cycles of AC followed by 4 cycles of Taxol (treatment every other week). Then I had surgery and axilla discetion (44 days after last chemo). Radiation was up next (about 1 month after surgery) (final one on Monday!!!!) I took a LOA during chemo/surgery, then went back to work. I had some nausea, but not a lot. I took Emend to help prevent nausea. > > Hello eveyone, I count myself very lucky that I have not had any > close friends or family members touched by breast cancer. Guest guest
Hi Diane , I started 6 months of chemo - 1 treatment every 3 weeks a month after surgery. I had a lot of nausea , kind of felt like i got hit w/ the flu every few weeks, except more intense w/ the tired part . was out of work during chemo. then i started about 6-7 weeks of radiation about a month after chemo - this just made me a little tired and had a sunburn and rash . i did go back to work during radiation. i am now almost a year and a half survivor. Guest guest
Ellie, isn't it nice to remind ourselves that this chemo time in our lives will be over? > > Hi, Lucinda, I've had a learning curve on the constipation/gas/diarrhea thing myself.
