Guest guest
Hey ! Is it possible to flucuate between hypo and hyper after (or while taking)) beginning synthroid? I had Graves (is it past tense if I've had RAI?) and have been on 50mcg of Synthroid for 6 weeks. My endo just increase the Synthroid to 88mcg and decreased the Inderal to once per day. (I like the Inderal, because it is really the ONLY thing that keeps the panic-like attacks at bay, so I'm leary to stop that.) Some days I go, go, go and other days it's all I can do to get up and get the kids to school. I crash every day at 4:30 p.m. for about 30 minutes because my legs feel like lead and glass (heavy and breakable--if THAT makes sense!) Here are my most recent labs (one week ago): TSH 7.894 T4, free (direct) 1.05 Triiodothyronine 2.2 The thing that has upset me the most (and what my doctor didn't seem concerned about) was that my TOTAL cholesterol went from 132 (8 weeks ago) to 199! My LDL is 131 which is SO high, but the ratio between HDL and LDL is okay (2.8). I did not want my cholesterol to go up. (My diet has not changed). I asked my doctor about these drastic mood swings, the anger and rage and he just upped the dosage of the synthroid. Will that really help? Should I just try to have more patience as my body adjusts to this? Note: I had to be on 10 days worth of Prednisone at the beginning of April (1-10) for a severe allergic reaction to an AVON product. I know the steroids affected my drastic moods and anger outbursts, but that should be out my system by now. These outbursts really come out of nowhere and it scares me. The thing that I'm grateful for, is that my doctor is not quick to prescribe mood altering drugs--I've tried those in the past, BEFORE being properly diagnosed with Graves, and they never worked. I am 41, btw. Had a hysterectomy in 2002, but still have one ovary. (Three 10# babies and two second trimester miscarriages.) Thank you for all your help, . As always, I'm glad this board is here. The support is great and it is good to know that others experience the same thing. TTYL, Dot
Guest guest
Dot, You still have Graves. The antibodies are still there. When did you have the RAI? I know I had two doses of it in 2000. First dose in July then they decided it didn't work so they did it again in November. That is one decision I wish I could take back. Ones with Graves if they give the ATD's a chance they can actually go in Remission and not have to take any meds at all. Not one person told me that when I was going thru everything and my family just want me well right NOW! They was getting ready to do a third dose when I said surgery....a cousin had just found out she had thyroid cancer so I knew with everything I had gone thru it was time for it come out. Cholestrol goes up when your hypo. We need ranges for those labs. The TSH is saying HYPO but with graves they can be suppressed also. Guest guest
You didn't give us ranges for the Thyroid hormones, but the TSH.. that is WAAAYYY over range.. that number, post treatment for Graves, should be near zero... You've just started on the Synthroid... it's gonna take some time to get your dose worked up.. get that TSH down... while all that is going on it's a good idea to keep an eye on the levels of the available thyroid hormones... they did the Free T4 but not Free T3.. they did do a total T3... don't know their logic there. Your 4:30 lead weight legs things is likely cuz you are still so hypo. The jumpy jittery thing is likely cuz your adrenals are still pretty unhappy with the Grave's hyper stuff in the past and now being hypo and trying to get stuff all figured out again after the RAI. Cholesterol naturally goes up when hypo... so I'd venture to say that it's an interim thing until you get your thyroid hormones back up and the TSH down. In the past high cholesterol was one of the red flags to check for hypo it's that strongly linked. High cholesterol from low thyroid doesn't have the same negative effect on the body as high cholesterol from bad diet... it's all in the chemistry how it all works. One of the hardest parts is being patient while you wait for your dosage adjustments and for those thyroid hormone levels to come back up... Keep on top of your doc until that TSH is way down (near zero) and your Free Ts are where the need to be AND your symptoms clear up.. .it can be done.. just don't settle before then.. okay? When are you scheduled for your next labs? Guest guest
Hi Sami, I had RAI on Jan 10, 2007 (this year). I do feel like I was started on Synthroid a bit early, but now I'm feeling ALL the symptoms of being HYPO and the short-term memory loss is what drives me crazy the most! Thanks for your reply. One more thing...I was tested for Lupus about 4-5 years ago and my ANA was 1:664 (or some number in the 600s....can't remember the exact number). My doctor won't do another ANA because he said he has no basis for it, but I thought Graves is an autoimmune disorder? Wouldn't all this be related? Thanks, again. Guest guest
Hi Topper, My next labs are in July, one week before my next appointment. (In about 8 weeks). Will the Synthroid bring the TSH levels to zero? I feel like I should go to back to school and pay attention to biology and the endocrine system! LOL... I apologize, but is Triiodothyronine the T3? On the lab result sheet, it does read " Triiodothyronine, Free, Serum " . I don't know what " free serum " means and/or the difference. I'm trying to find information and read as much as I can so I can know more and understand what is happening. How does daily stress (life) affect our thryoid labs? April was just super stressful for me, so I'm wondering if that is one reason why I was feeling so Hyperthyroid again and then Hypo on the days that I just couldn't deal anymore. I have " The Thyroid Solution " by Ridha (very helpful) and a book about Adrenal Fatigue, which isn't too helpful. I just can't thank you enough. Today is a " I-feel-like-crying " day, but will try to do some work around the house. Your letter (and the one by Sami) was a wonderful support and a welcome sight. Thanks, Dot --- topper2@... wrote: > You didn't give us ranges for the Thyroid hormones, > but the TSH.. that is > WAAAYYY over range.. that number, post treatment for > Graves, should be > near zero... > > You've just started on the Synthroid... it's gonna > take some time to get > your dose worked up.. get that TSH down... while all > that is going on > it's a good idea to keep an eye on the levels of the > available thyroid > hormones... they did the Free T4 but not Free T3.. > they did do a total > T3... don't know their logic there. > > Your 4:30 lead weight legs things is likely cuz you > are still so hypo. > The jumpy jittery thing is likely cuz your adrenals > are still pretty > unhappy with the Grave's hyper stuff in the past and > now being hypo and > trying to get stuff all figured out again after the > RAI. > > Cholesterol naturally goes up when hypo... so I'd > venture to say that > it's an interim thing until you get your thyroid > hormones back up and the > TSH down. Guest guest
Dot, It looks like the RAI worked Fast on you. We really need the ranges for those labs. It takes a while to get the meds right but I recently decided they never get them right and things keep changing. I hate how some doctors now say that you are cured of the graves. That is such a crock of BULL! Now you still have graves but have added Hypothyroidism to the mix. Where graves is an autoimmune disease you are now prone to more of them. Stress is a big factor with graves and makes it worse. So whatever you can do to get rid of the stress your body will thank you. Yes. I know that is easier said, than done! As for the lupus I don't know anything about it. So can't help you there. I know I was tested for it once also. You might want to join the Graves Support Group. I love this group for the hypo aspect but the hyper-graves aspect they are more knowledgeable there. I figure it now takes both to keep me going and I'm still learning even after all these years. Guest guest
Hey Sami, Are the ranges the same or different for everyone? On my lab sheet it lists the ranges as: TSH range: 0.350-5.500 and mine was 7.894 (In January BEFORE the RAI, my TSH was .005!) T4, Free (direct) range: 0.61-1.76 and mine was 1.05 Triiodothyronine, free, serum range 2.3-4.2 and mine was 2.2. Can I get rid of stress? You KNOW i had to laugh out loud! LOLOL! I DID turn over my volunteer concession duties (44 hours per week---ALL volunteer time since mid-March!) on Thursday night when my husband's father died. It was hard for me to do that, since I'm very type A and somewhat controlling when it comes to making money and things I'm in charge over. BUT, by the third day of not having to worry about the concession stand, it really felt like a load was lifted off my shoulders. I've begged for help in there all season (tried to get help from the other volunteer board members and other parents in our league) and no one would ever step up. Now that I'm not there, it is funny to me to see their emails begging for help! BUT, I'm not stressed over that anymore and I hope it improves my health. I need to start going to the gym again, I'm hoping that will not only improve my weight and shape, but also give me some energy. I had started working out in January (after the ablation) and was doing fine until the beginning of April--when I started the Synthroid and hurt my knee at Parris Island with the high school JROTC field trip. Thankfully, my knee has healed and without the pain associated with that, I should be able to start off slowly again with exercise. I'll look at that Graves support group, too. I wish we had a local " live " group in town, but I'm always thankful for this one. :-) Dot --- Sami samkelly729@...> wrote: > Dot, > It looks like the RAI worked Fast on you. Guest guest
Dot, Something else to consider did they overdose you with the ATD to get the TSH to move? Then they gave you the RAI and that also made you really hypo. That is a game the docs like to do to Grave patients also after the RAI they will let you get really hypo trying to get the TSH to move when it can be surpressed for years. The more I read about RAI it should only be used as a last resort and for thyroid cancer. Sigh...can you tell I wish I had never done it? Lab ranges are different with every lab. Disregarding the TSH. Your T4 is about in the middle of the range and the T3 is clear at the bottom. You definitly need an increase in meds. I wonder if you are having conversion problems too. They say graves patients don't usually have problems there. I don't believe that anymore since I'm starting to have problems there also. Are you taking Selenium? That helps your body convert the T4 into T3 which is what your body uses. Stress...Big Subject! I turned down a church position a few months before I ended up in the hospital with the Graves. I think I knew even then that something was wrong. I used to be the family peacemaker. Not anymore...I can't handle stress of any kind. Of course now I'm a caretaker for an 82 year old father and stress is an everyday thing with him. So I deal with what I can and the rest I pass to my sisters to deal with. Stress Wisdom from the groups.....yoga, Tai Chi, massages, acupunture, Tension Tamer tea, and Rescue Remedy. So far the only one I have tried is the Rescue Remedy once. I think I had an allergic reaction to it. So don't know if I will try that again. I was really upset when I tried it. It did help but my lips started to swell. Now that I have you totally confused...Why can't this be easier????? Sami > > Hey Sami, > > Are the ranges the same or different for everyone?
