Sorry to disagree but I have to agree with the other poster about public education. Do you think the average member of the public has a clue as to the differences between a first Responder and a Paramedic or an EMT-B? Do you think that if you pull up in an ambulance and a pair of scrubs they'd see you as not being " pubic Safety " and being health care by the Grace of God? If you asked 100 Texas " Is EMS an essential government function " how many would say yes? This are we medical, public heath, public safety argument we have here in EMS alone demonstrates we can't agree let alone Q who will only worry about EMS when he calls 9-1-1. Louis N. Combine it with EMS pants and we have a distinct professionl look, that shows we are healthcare professionals that work out in the streets. But that too is a matter of opinion. I for one think the scrubs top with EMS Pants looks sloppy. In some ways on this topic I am a traditionalist. I have always worn the standard button down shirt with epaulets and the traditional badge,(we had however moved to an embroidered badge & collor " brass " ). Most of the " progressive " EMS agencies in the northeast US where I did most of my street time were moving to the " polo " or golf type shirts as long as ten years ago and I felt that done right those were more professional looking and frankly they were more comfortable in the summer. I argued long and hard for this change in my agency with my chief who was even more of the traditionalist thinker on that point, it took 4 years to get him to allow us to make the move from the button down shirt to the polo shirt. He'd likely have a stroke if I suggested scrubs and EMS pants. Much of this is eye of the beholder the key is by and far Public Education. Louis N. Guest guest
Re uniforms: I am totally against uniforms that look anything like law enforcement. I do not think badges have a place in EMS. First, if they're real badges, they become vectors for infection. How many of you ever clean your badge? How many ever clean your stethoscope for that matter? Medicare is cracking down on hospitals who don't enforce their own infection control rulels, and EMS may be next. Not only that, but they get caught on stuff and ripped off. The Border Patrol just ditched their badges for sewn on ones. Nametags are also infection carriers. The uniform I like is a polo that's say red or gold, with Paramedic (or EMT) in big letters across the back, and the name of the service and the last name of the person embroidered on there in about inch high letters in a contrasting color. I don't want ANYBODY mistaking me for a cop when I arrive on scene. (Guess I'm not going to have to worry about that since I have, once again, retired). Guest guest
Take a look at the back page of Texas EMS this month. You'll see the Lubbock EMS's uniforms. I like them.
