Wes, is it really fair to compare EMS to politics? I mean come on even the

Have not heard...but if they did give it to AMR that's MUCH better than Guardian

having. I'm sure that AMR would honor the contract better anyway.

Last I've heard was that the county was evaluating the responses to the RFP.Â

Supposedly, only Guardian and AMR submitted bids.

Still, they refuse to fund EMS suitably -- which means the RFP process usually

results in a choice between Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.

Then again, this is the county whose sheriff resigned for corruption charges and

still has an indicted commissioner on the commissioner's court.

To All on the List:

After a heavy show of support for Guardian EMS by the citizens of the county,

through petition signatures, phone calls to their city/county politician of

choice and an apparently rousing show of support Monday morning at

Commissioner's Court, the issue has been tabled until further notice for

additional discussion. During the approximately 72 hours prior to the meeting,

the citizens appeared to have voiced their opinions strongly in favor of

Guardian EMS. From what I was told, a large number of Bastrop County citizens

crowded into the court to speak in favor of Guardian EMS, with only two company

representatives from AMR attending. During the weekend, on shift yesterday, and

today off duty, people have been telling me to " keep up the good work " , " we're

behind you " , don't let them wear you down " , and even " we love you guys " . I've

only heard ONE negative comment so far, and that was from somebody I expected a

negative comment from (you know who you

are).

The change of providers for Bastrop County is NOT a done deal, no matter WHAT

you have heard around the water cooler. If you want to know what's going on,

come to Commissioner's Court or ask someone who knows - that's what I did, since

I was on duty in Elgin while the court was meeting.

I've worked for all three of the most recent providers in Bastrop County:

Rural/Metro, MetroCare and Guardian. Of the three, I am most happy with the way

Guardian has treated my family and myself. My mother, who is a bed &

wheelchair-confined invalid, is still fighting with collection agencies for a

transport by a prior provider, which was improperly documented by the crew who

transported her - when someone is LIFTED from bed, they didn't SELF-TRANSFER, at

least not in my book.

To Wayne:

If Guardian EMS is failing to honor the Bastrop County contract in any way, I'd

to see you information. You can e-mail it to me off list or contact me for my

fax number.

So, Barry, lemme get this straight. ALL THESE PEOPLE just spontaneously

showed up at the meeting to show support to Guardian? And, gee, some people

just got together over coffee one morning and said, " Why don't we start a

petition to keep Guardian, and lets call all our friends and tell them to call

the

Judge and Commissioners and tell them to keep them? " And they just went out

and did it.

Sorry, but your doggie hid under the porch and won't come out to hunt.

Now, you know I've got NO QUARREL with you, Barry. I respect you greatly,

always have, and I know you don't lie.

But come on! Things like that don't happen spontaneously. Somebody was

out beating the bushes for support for Guardian.

Not that it's bad to do that. Bidness is bidness, and if I were Guardian, I

would be using every tactic legally and ethically available to keep the

business, but it stretches the imagination to think that a wellspring of support

for Guardian just spontaneously happened.

I doubt that Joe and Citizen have a single clue about what the

differences between an AMR run service and a Guardian service.

So this IS politics, ain't it?

I knew my favorite EMS lawyer (sorry Wes) would cross-examine me on this one.

(wink)

Actually Gene, you ARE correct. It wasn't spontaneous. The biggest push came

from both hospitals, followed by our efforts, the efforts of the admin staff of

all four nursing homes, the county first responder group, and a large number of

the local physicians. The rest of the effort came from a number of families &

patients we have served as care providers.

Add to this the fact that AMR is a " big company from somewhere else, like that

outfit before MetroCare " (Rural/Metro) -- this being said to me by a local

rancher -- and people just got fired-up. So yes, there was some politics going

on. Quite a few of the attitudes I'm hearing are along the lines of " why mess

with a good thing? " or " it ain't broke, why try to fix it? " .

Is it going to work in the long run? I have no idea. What I do know is that

the majority of our employees are planning on staying with Guardian should we

lose the contract.

No offense, but this sure sounds like astroturf lobbying, not a real grassroots

effort...

Unlike genuine grassroots activism which tends to be money-poor but people-rich,

astroturf campaigns are typically people-poor but cash-rich. Funded heavily by

corporate largesse, they use sophisticated computer databases, telephone banks

and hired organizers to rope less-informed activists into sending letters to

their elected officials or engaging in other actions that create the appearance

of grassroots support for their client's cause. (as described at

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Astroturf)

I'm probably not at liberty to reveal that, but you can contact the higher-ups

to find out. I could tell you, but they need to break-in the rack and iron

maiden they recently installed, and I have a deep aversion to torture <grin>.

Seriously though, the crews in Bastrop County have NO WORRIES, should we lose

the contract.

In the event of a change, I myself will either stay with Guardian or go into a

seedier profession, like that of a bartender, repo-man or a lawyer <wink>.

Wes,

The recommendation to accept the AMR bid was kept very close to the vest, and

was only revealed (leaked?) on Friday morning, so even if there WAS a plan to

employ " astroturf activism " , there wasn't a chance to implement it.

I hear that there maybe several opening in the Mineral Wells/Weatherford area

soon, once the TDH investigation is complete on some employeed there, who MAY

HAVE cheated on paramedic clinical times. Some could be decertified.

No, Barry this is not rumor, check the list messages, it was posted by a

Guardian employee.

If they cheated, they deserve whatever punishment they get. I know about the

Weatherford incident. I just didn't realize they were employees of my company.

As Shakespeare once said: " A pox upon them " . Cheating is NEVER an

option in my playbook, nor has it ever been in yours. They will receive and

suffer whatever DSHS has in store for them.

And to add further clarification to my previous answer to Matt's question (and

this comes directly from my boss): the " A " and " B " grade-quality employees will

be used to fill the spaces vacated by " D " and " F " employees, if necessary.
