there was a photo of a funeral procession (at least in the fort worth paper) of

the funeral procession of the noonday vfd firefighter in which the vehicle

directly behind the fire engine was a full-sized white truck with a couple of

people in the bed and a confederate

flag flying from it. did anyone else see this photo and find it tacky in the

least and/or disturbing?

Why would it be tacky or disturbing? A Confederate battle flag, part of our

heritage of the South?

Nope, not disturbed one bit. Would my display of the 1st National Flag of

the Confederacy in the Middle East be disturbing? The 1st National was the

" official " flag. The one so often seen is the Confederate battle flag,

taken from the Confederate ensign flown aboard CSS ships, was not that

commonly used during the war itself.

Jim,

Just a little perspective of that photo. That white truck belonged to one of

the deceased FF (Austin Cheek) and was not just another POV that was in the

procession.

I won't even begin to debate with you if the flag should have or should have

not been there as this does not seem the forum to re-fight the War Against

Nothern Agression :).. Just wanted you to know about the truck.

So why would anyone find it offensive? If I were black I may due to what it once

represented. Of course it represented more than just that issue. Heck I see kids

now days getting tattoo's of it because they think it makes them a better red

neck. Many have the flags in their trucks because they have no idea about what

it represents. Maybe the funeral was all about the person being buried being a

good old redneck. Either way to many people find things offensive just because

they think they must. I am not saying that you are that person. I am just saying

that if people don't like something, they can look away, walk away, turn off the

tv or don't go to that site on the web. I said something one time (probably the

only time I ever did) that offended someone. They told me they were offended and

I told them that I too was offended that they were offended. I guess it is all

about perception. If the person being buried wanted that flag then he/she paid

for the right.

Don't take my comment to seriously, I don't mean to offend anyone.

I think you got to give the grieving a pass on a lot of things. People say and

do things during grieving that we just need to let go....

I don't find the Confederate flag offensive. I don't find the swastika

offensive either.

I view both of those symbols as reminders of what can happen to a society if we

don't pay attention to what our government does " for us. " I am absolutely

positively not going to engage in any discussion regarding whether or not any

citizens of the Confederacy or Nazi Germany had any say-so in the matter.

Absolutely...period...enough said!? Who cares if anyone was offended...the

funeral is for the family, co-workers and friends to grieve and celebrate a

life...what it means to anyone else viewing a newspaper photo many miles away

really doesn't matter.

Absolutely correct.

How I choose to honor the dead may not be anywhere near what my neighbor

does. Neither of us is right or wrong, just different.

Funerals are for the living, it’s their time to honor the dead, and to

grieve in their own fashion.

I am a little confused here....

How did we go from.... " I think this is tacky... " to " offended by history " ?

Never mind, I probably don't even want to know.....

Mike

Re: tacky photo of ff funeral procession

Why does History offend people? Were you ( the offended ) part of it when it

happened? I don't think so.

Let it go! How are you going to feel when you are confined to your house 24

hours a day because everything that this country has fought for is gone?

When I see that flag or any other piece of history that has made this

country what it is today, I am proud of it ( good or bad) because I know I

have the freedom

to sit here and tell you that I am offended that you are offended. Rednecks

wear it, fly it, cover their beds with it, and to this day will defend it

for what ever they think it stands for. When I see it I do not think of

slavery because no one I have EVER known was ever a slave. What I do think

of when I see it is a very proud SOUTHERNER.

Take a moment and think to yourself one question. Does how I feel when I

see that flag going to change to my liking if I tell everyone I do not like

it? Should we ALL have to give up lima beans because you think they do not

go well fried okra and corn?

My personal thoughts..
