Guest guest
Hi everybody, I just had a question pop into my head. I have an uptake scan scheduled for 23/24 and I just wanted to know why they told me to stop taking my thyroid medicine. Won't it give a false picture. I mean if my thyroid is starved of synthroid, and it sucks up the iodine. Will it make the situation appear worse than what it actually is or vice versa? And the thyroid likes iodine to begin with right? Thanks, Robin
Guest guest
The stuff that are giving you to be able to see your gland is a very very mild dose of radioactive iodine. By depriving your gland of the Synthroid before the uptake scan it will be HUNGRY for iodine and so will suck it all up quickly.. that will give them the clearest picture of the gland as they check size and for nodules and such. The hungrier your gland, the lower the dose they give you, the better things work all around. I got to watch my scan, the tech failed to move the monitor so that I couldn't see it, he got chewed out for that too.... the gland and every thing else looks darkish. As it starts to filter out the iodine they've given you it starts to brighten up. It was awesome to watch.. the way it just moves though all the parts of the gland... Tissues inside the gland that don't change color, lighten up, are not actively filtering.. (the thyroid gland is basically an iodine filter, using the iodine that it catches to build thyroid hormone). Those are the areas that they concentrate on to determine why they didn't take up any iodine.
