Guest guest
Some of you know about my divorce being very public due to my ex being an elected official. Well therefore our divorce and Max's needs have become a topic of many blogs back in WV. I ran across one the other day and couldn't believe what I read. They referred to Max as " severely disfigured and retarded. " I was shocked, horrified, appalled...to say the least. I still am stunned that someone could be so ruthless. So of course I immediately posted on that forum and explained how truly amazing, beautiful Max was and how inappropriate their terminology was. Someone last night actually had the nerve to say it again and said they understand they were not being " PC " but that indeed he is " disfigured and retarded. " I know you all will understand how incredibly FURIOUS I was about this. I know there is ignorance in this world, I get that and I know I should just ignore it. And I know those are just words and sometimes people just don't know any better. But we have been so blessed to have so many people fall in love with Maxwell that I forget some people might discriminate against him because of his looks or abilities. AAAHHHH! Who could ever think our amazing, strong, beautiful children are anything less than perfect???? Guest guest
It's hard to believe but ignorance is bred from fear and those people who act like that and speak like that are the people who are the most afraid. I pity them and their ignorance and hope that someday they will be given the opportunity to become enlightened and unafraid like we have. www.chargesyndrome.info > > Some of you know about my divorce being very public due to my ex being > an elected official. Guest guest
i am so sorry that people can be ignorant. i hate the word retarded. when you look it up it means the inability to learn, our children do learn. it is a shame that your private life has to become public especially to people that do not know any better. bless you for your strength, and i hope you blast him in the divorce! Guest guest
First of all, I can't believe anyone would call Max " disfigured, " without extending that comment to Max's father. I've seen pictures...Max looks just like him. And while Max's dad is definately challenged in the compassion department, physically he looks like just a regular guy. Obviously, the person making these comments has very narrow mind when it comes to physical beauty. Maybe you could explain it to them this way: Max is as " retarded " as they would be if someone shoved cotton balls in their ears, then ear muffs on top of that and then stuffed their mouth full of paper and stuck a strip of duct tape over that. Without a way to communicate to each other, we are all " retarded. " And Max is as " disfigured " as that person would be if they came down with Bell's palsy. Another way to explain it to them might be to illustrate how all it would take is one unfortunate accident or health problem, and they could be in the same boat as Max. A stroke can take away the ability to speak and/or swallow. I know a woman who lost her ability to talk completely from a stroke she had 10 years ago. With intensive speech therapy, she learned to speak all over again. But she still frequently has difficulty finding the right words. Bell's palsy, a stroke, or trauma can lead to a facial palsy. I know a 17 year old who a few months ago was in a sledding accident and severed his left facial nerve. He has been told if the nerve is going to grow back, it will happen in the first six months. So far, no progress. A viral infection could take away hearing, or it could just be lost as an aging change. Meniere's disease could cause vertigo and a loss of balance. Guest guest
Amy, I can't add anything more to what others have said about the torment you and Max are being forced to go through. You know the truth and that is what matters--Max is gorgeous and bright and oh-so-special. And you deserve better than what is happening to you--I hope in the end your ex-husband (congrats) gets what he deserves--what goes around comes around and hopefully those people on the list who have decided to include you in their discussions will shift quickly to him and his loathsome ickiness. pam extremely hurtful words Some of you know about my divorce being very public due to my ex being an elected official. Guest guest
Amy, I am so frustrated for you, for Max, ... for all of our children. I, too, am disgusted by the complete lack of empathy, integrity, and dignity people show. If they only knew how beautiful and amazing these little guys (and gals) really are! It is interesting that you bring up this topic. Lately, I have been noticing that people have been looking at Vinny with a " ohhh, poor baby " or " oh dear, what happened to him " look instead of that " oh, what a precious little guy " look. It just breaks my heart. Here we see Vinny as beautiful and amazing, just like our other son. We don't see a nose that is constantly running, a facial palsy that prevents him from smiling like other kids, an eye that doesn't close so well on its own, ... It makes my heart sad that there are those who will judge without knowing. It makes me more sad to know that Vinny will have obstacles ahead of him that other kids, including his brother, won't have. It makes my heart full, though, to know that we will bring up Vinny with the love and confidence that will help him through those times. I wish I had something great to say here... all I have is-- I know exactly what you are saying. I cannot wait to meet you guys in California! ina, mom to Luca (3.5) & Vinny (1.5 w/ cHARgE) --- Amy McKinley wrote: > Some of you know about my divorce being very public > due to my ex being an elected official. Guest guest
This person who replied to your post Amy needs to hear some of 's, and others, words. I read their words to my husband and he was so mad and had some unkind words for that person. I am usually the one to get upset by these things(which I was) but boy, he was MAD!! I really think that a majority of people DO see our children the way we do. Nothing but complete blessings to our world. Unfortunately there are some like the one who wrote into that blog. I don't even fault the first person as much for using bad terminology. We all say things. My father in law used the " r " word just yesterday as we were getting ready to eat Easter dinner. Of course Mike and I correcected him and explained the connotation etc. He agreed. And I can tell you that he loves our CHARGEr(as well as our others)and is more involved in their care(esp. Peyton) more than any other family member. We've had Peyton for 10 years and he still slipped with that. It's a change in mindset for some people. To him, it's synonomous for " silly " or " stupid " but nonetheless he is trying to stop using it(with our help). HOWEVER, the person who wrote back and used those words the second time needs to hear some of OUR words for them. That is unexcusable. It's not about being PC, it's about having a heart. They are completely vile for coming back with that description after you said what you did. I really wish you could let us all " have at them " (especially . We have been praying for you and Max, Amy since we read last week. I couldn't post a comment(tried 2 or 3 times) but it doesn't mean I haven't been thinking about you all. I really think your friends who suggested a fund for you two had it right. If you're open to it, we all would love to help you out!! Love and hugs and prayers and anything else we can do for you!!!!!! Corrie > > Blog him/her back Amy. Guest guest
Amy, I have to say I look at Max and I see one of the most beautiful children god had ever put on this planet!! I would never looks at our kids as deformed. The retarded part is just people who are never around children like ours, they are smart and bright and I see them doing wonderful new things everyday. I know its hard since your divorce is in the media and I would be mad too. Hang in there hun and remember we are always here for you.
