Major drug companies are paying senator kennedy to ban compounding of

medications. My charger son has all his meds compounded to be given

through his g-button, so I was pretty shocked to hear this & thought

everyone should have a heads up to what's happening.

Compounded medications are medications that a pharmacist has to mix up either

because the concentration or the form of the drug isn't commercially available.

Evan's Prevacid is compounded by a pharmacist, who mixes the powder inside the

capsules with a buffered solution to make a suspension of a certain strength. I

have had to order an antibiotic eyedrop for a patient compounded from an IV

solution because it needed to be " fortified " (stronger than the commercial

formulation). This legislation is bad news. There are very few pharmacists who

compound these days anyway, but for those times you need it those pharmacists

are lifesavers. This will give drug companies a huge advantage and drive prices

up higher--each time they market a different concentration or dosing schedule of

the same drug they will be able to take out a new patent. So a medication you

can get in one strenght or formulation as a generic would be a brand name if the

concentration was different.
