I don't know if it's thyroid related or not, but I feel the need to blink to clear my left eye often, especially when watching television. It does work to clear it, but not for long.. Judy

Hi there,

I know exactly what you mean on this one ! Although no one else seems to.

lol The ophthalmologist I mentioned it to looked at me as if I was from

outer space ! He just said there was absolutely nothing wrong with my eyes.

So I've never mentioned it to any other doctor, and therefore have no idea

what causes it. I did wonder if it was something to do with my high blood

pressure. Do you have high blood pressure ? There doesn't seem to be any one

thing that brings it on. The first time it happened I'd stayed up all night

and thought it was because of that. But since it has come on for seemingly

no reason at all. Sometimes I wake up with it. Other times I can just be

sitting doing nothing much. I don't know. But if you manage to find out what

it is, let me know, I'd be very interested.

All the best, Lili

The only thing I notice with my eyes is that I have these 2 dark flecks in them that I see when I read. I thought about going to an eye doc to have looked at.

I don't have any thyroid eye problems (my exothalmous resolved early

on after my thyroid problem resolution) but neurologists have a

variety of state of the art tests for the eyes that opthalmologists do

not have. I mean I don't know your situation but if an

opthalmologist is already seeing you and finding nothing wrong yet you

ARE having unexplainable eye symptoms you would be wise to also have a

check up by a neurologist. Just my thought. Or call your eye doctor

back if you have not mentioned these symptoms as yet.

Rob4,

Do they tell you they are floaters. I was told that mine were

nothing but floaters which are worse in an all white wall room ie.

their exam room or docs offices but most of the time I forget I have

them. So much a part of my eyes these days. I am told these days

that as long as there is no major change from my normal symptoms not

to worry but if any change concerns me to call up and they would get

me in to check me if warranted. Which they did once for me. I was to

be there in one hour if possible. I was not prepared for that to be

told to be over the phone. I guess I had s/s of a potential retinal

tear which was still in early stages and taken care of without a

problem. Was not any thyroid related problem.

I had high blood pressure when I was pregnant and the doctor kept asking me if my sight was ok. He asked if there were any "floaties" in my vision. When I told him yes, I saw things floating like they were on my contacts, he immediately put me in the hospital and we induced delivery (I was close anyway so it was OK). The fact that I was seeing floaties had him very concerned about my health and blood pressure. I have never seen the "floaties" again, so I think they are specific to high blood pressure. Although, earlier today I had lines in my vision and was just going to ask if this was a thyroid related thing. Sheila in Utah liliane wise

I've had floaters in my eyes for many many years - but it's not the same

problem as looking through a broken mirror, as was first mentioned. And it

was going to the doctor about it that brought about the beginning of the

end, as far as my thyroid was concerned. The 'wonderful' doctor I saw called

me hysterical (although I hardly said a word) and gave me iodine to drink -

no explaination, nothing. I was 35, and from there on it was all down-hill.

In retrospect, I can only assume that he associated my probem with an

underproductive thyroid, and was one of those doctors that believe a little

drop of iodine and you're as good as new ! I don't know of any other reason

to give people iodine. But he didn't do a blood test, or ask about other

symptoms or anything.

Also in retrospect, I've had an under productive thyroid all my life,

judging by the symptoms, but was just passed off as lazy, stupid,

hypocondriac and in need of a psychiatrist. But after drinking the iodine,

my symptoms just got worse and worse... OK, not going to go into all the

details, but it took me nearly 30 years after that to get a diagnosis of

Hashi's. Had I not drunk that blessed iodine, I wonder how my life would

have turned out... Totally different, I'll bet ! And that, dear friends, is

why I am now a) very anti iodine, and B) very very anti doctor !!! lol

Actually one time I had the reverse problem. I went to a neurologist

as a last straw attempt to see if maybe I had a death defying

neurological disorder and heck he found in the process that I had an

eye disorder of which I had no symptoms and still do not know what it

was. He sent me back to my eye doctor. So that is why I suggested

the neurologists tests.

Hi,

It's possible that what you have are what most eye doctors refer to as floaters. These can be debris, blood and other things. Mine were so large I had to have laser surgery to break them into smaller pieces. They become more prominent the older you get or in my case I have poor circulation and my eye developed an incomplete blood vessel. I would advise seeing an eye doctor. I don't know how related it is to my thyroid, mine was possibly due to diabetes

Yes a neighbor of mine when I was young said she had what used to be

termed " toxemia of pregnancy " and she said she went temporarily blind

until some point and the baby was born shoking on tons of mucous.

I have normal blood pressure (no meds needed) so my floaters which

came not until I was older is/are not related to blood pressure.

But you brought up a good point that got me to recall my neighbor from

younger days. I think they call that toxemia eclamsia today.

Lee,

Mine are like yours. I only "see" them when I'm looking at something light colored (such as a white wall). My Mom has them too and she says, like you, that they are "floaters".

Oh I can see them ie. now that you have been talking about the and

when I put my mind on them but LOL I guess we with floaters have to

force ourselves (train our brain) to be like the little kids who just

do not see the need to wash their gooped up glasses so mom does it for

them. We with floaters cannot wash them away so we have to tell our

brain to just forget about those darn dirty cob web like things (mine

are more like cob webs) and just concentrate more on our content so we

see past or areound them (which ever it is if not both scenarios).

Lori,

Please take the advice of my earlier post. I mean do not try to

diagnose yourself. I learned not to do that from caring for an

elderly family member and going to eye doctors offices that there are

so so many disorders that even the patients cannot see and which

resemble one another that should be caught early and you have more

symptoms that you are talking about than just the so called spots.

This is from my Graves group, thought it might help you. I know it

helped me.

Sami

Keeping your thyroid levels optimal, neither too high nor low, will

help reduce eye symptoms. And 1000 mg flaxseed oil daily will help

reduce eye dryness and grittiness, which should help relieve soreness.

Diet is also important, especially avoiding iodine, sugar and

saturated fats. You can read more Tips for Ted at
