Guest guest
Hi all, I'll be buying my first mastectomy bra and prosthesis this week. I know they are quite pricey, even with a prescription, so I want to make sure I get something I'll be happy with. Up until now, I've been wearing a regular bra with a sock in it. The sock moves around and the bra rides up, so I'm always checking for symetry. I'm still pretty tender and can only tolerate it for several hours at a time. Can anyone give advice or tips on what to look for and what to avoid? It's for a single mast and I'm a barely B cup. Thanks, Kathleen in Kirtland
Guest guest
Its a personal decision on what kind of prosthesis to get. I will tell you this much, if you have any allergies to tapes etc do NOT get the one that you can adhere to your skin. Are you going somewhere to be fitted? If so the lady can show you all the styles and recommend what she feels is best for you. Guest guest
Hey Kathleen! I found the mastectomy bras so ugly that I ened up buying regular bras in colors that I wanted (not the push ups of course - lol) and taking them to a specialty store in my area where the woman sews in pockets for the prosthesis. You just pop them in, they fit well and no one can tell. Also, if you are looking for bathsuits, LandsEnd carries mastectomy suits. -------------- Original message -------------- Hi all, I'll be buying my first mastectomy bra and prosthesis this week. Guest guest
Kathleen, The first thing I was told was to make sure I was completely healed before I was fitted. It's not so much that you are tender but that you might still be swollen. So I went the first time with my daughter just to see what they had. A couple months later, I actually went to be fitted. I have my prosthesis but wear it only when I go to church, need to dress up, etc. It's not that its uncomfortable when I wear it but it doesn't give like my normal breast. Also, the mastectomy was on my left side, my small side and I have a little trouble adjusting to the fact that my breasts are both the same size (go figure on that one, growing up and always complaining that my left was smaller). Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I would go to a store that specializes in prosthesis & mastectomy bras, like Lady Grace in the NE. They have certified mastectomy specialists who are really good at eyeballing you (no need for shyness here) and recommending the right prosthesis & bra. They also do the insurance paperwork. I think insurance covers a certain amount of prostheses & bras a year. The women at Lady Grace said I could have 2 prosthesis - a waterproof one & regular one. Once I got the prosthesis & bra from Lady Grace (alot of money but covered by insurance), I found the same things online & cheaper at metromedicalonline.com. I am like you in size - at least on one side :-), and at first just used regular bras. I found I still can use my regular bras, but they have to be underwire (keeps my flat side from riding up & keeps my real & fake boob at the same level). I found I need a mastectomy bra or snug sports bra for exercising - as I found when my prosthesis kept falling out at yoga class. -
