This is the first time this place has ever done a FT3 or FT4. I wonder if that T3 is really a free. I asked about the T3 and she thought it was no big deal. Does this mean I am starting to have conversion problems. Opinions please! Thanks, Sami Graves in May 2000 RAI July 2000 RAI May 2001 Thyroid Surgery Mar 2002 On complete Thyroid REPLACEMENT! Guest guest
You could really use some T3, it's in range but it could be higher. Guest guest
In my opinion...... Your Free T4 is up toward the top of it's range with the Free T3 near the bottom of its.... suggests lousy conversion Did the dose increase help you feel any better? Do you symptom say that the increase was a move in the right direction? Are you doing the 'little things' to help conversion? avoid/reduce the HFCS, soy and other goitrogens taking selenium eating regularly... If you are already doing that, and your symptoms are not acceptable.. I'd say it's time to starting thinking about adding T3, either as Cytomel or by adding (or switching to) Armour. How does your doc feel about your numbers? He's not really 'up' on things.. still using the old TSH ranges.. It's been four years now since they were changed.... Guest guest
Hi Topper, Yes the dose increased helped a lot. I'm not having all the hypo symptoms anymore. But that lab really got me wondering. I even pointed out the T3 to her. Duh...she is a ditz! It's perfectly fine to her. I did get her to agree that we needed to watch it. Then tells me labs in 6 months. I need to watch the soy/hfcs more. I'm doing 200 selenium and have recently been adding a couple of Brazil nuts everyday. I think that helps. To make my 225 dosage I am taking a 200 & a 25 pill. I have some Nutrimeds here. I am wondering if I just took the 200 Levo and added 1/4 or 1/2 a tablet of the nutrimed. I bought a bottle in December when I was afraid I was going run out of meds and thought that was better than nothing if the worst happened. It's a brand new bottle that I haven't even opened yet. I was getting paranoid about getting low on meds. Or do I stay on the 225 and have labs run in a few months and see what the T3 is doing. I do have labs bought and paid for thru Healthcheck already. Decisions...decisions and don't trust the doctor.... Are you doing everything you can be doing to aid conversion? Selinium etc? How are you feeling? My guess is you are feeling hypo and need some T3 to help you feel better.. Guest guest
Since what you are watching to see if your conversion is the issue and have just done an increase to get your T4 level up to see fit that will give the conversion rate more to work with, I'd stay on what you are doing now and wait for labs. Be careful with Selenium... you don't want to take too much over too long a period of time, it can work it's way up to toxic levels. You're not at risk now, with the 200 mcg of selenium and the 2 nuts.. but I won't be snacking on any more than that.... HFCS actually blocks conversion.. so that's a pretty big deal if your conversion isn't so hot to begin with... I suspect that my great craving for soda had to do with my being hyper and the HFCS blocking conversion and making it not as extreme for me... along the same line as my sudden craving for soy nuts and broccoli.... The Nutri-Meds... you know I'm a fan of theirs. Part of my daily dosing is their's.... Keep in mind that one of their thyroid tabs is equal to 'about' 1 grain of prescription grade. HFCS is some scary stuff, the more I read about it. It triggers hunger, it fails to satisfy us in ANY nutritional context, and messes with conversion... Then you look out at the world and see kids in every direction drinking sodas/pop... it's either had artificial sweeteners (with all it's dangers) or HFCS and then people wonder why kids have attention problems, weight problems, learning problems..... duh... Guest guest
Kats and Topper, Thank you for your input. I'm not having all the hypo symptoms I was having but then I know I was in bad shape in December. Then you start second guessing yourself to where I'm not sure what normal even is anymore. I know I need to watch the HFCS more and I will be careful with the selenium. So I will stay on what I'm on now and do labs in a few months and we will see what the numbers are. Then go from there again. At least I know that it is something I need to watch! I'm so glad this group is here... Thanks, Sami > > Since what you are watching to see if your conversion is the issue and > have just done an increase to get your T4 level up to see fit that will > give the conversion rate more to work with, I'd stay on what you are > doing now and wait for labs. > > Be careful with Selenium... you don't want to take too much over too long > a period of time, it can work it's way up to toxic levels. Guest guest
Second guessing.. oh yeah.. we're good friends. Judging 'normal' I've faced this question. I look at the world and what most people seem to be able to do... and then take it by degrees. Most people can go grocery shopping and carry their bags in and put stuff away when they get home.. so that was a goal.... stuff like that. I don't aim to be running marathons and then vacuum the house!!! More important, I think, is to aim to be a bit better with whatever, today than you were week ago, or month ago, or year ago... depending on what the thing is that you are working to getting better at doing. If you look at it from the point of view that your body is in training, to get into better physical shape and to be able to accomplish more day to day things.. then take stuff into perspective as being a training situation where you strive to steadily increase your abilities... it makes it easier to applaud progress and do less of the beating yourself up cuz you didn't do as much as someone else did. ...at least that viewpoint helps me.. Guest guest
And it doesn't help with this disease and the tricks it plays with your mind. GGGrrrr... Thanks Topper, at least with this group I don't feel so alone anymore. And we all know family will never GET what we are going thru.
