Guest guest
Yes, I am on a small, 5 mg dose of predisone, it helps a very little with the pains of fibro, and also take armour. You might gain a few pounds at the beginning but that settles down, it usually is just water retention. Bubbe Gittel************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Is anyone out there taking cortisone along with armour thyroid? I am concearned about my weight. Prior to taking anything, I had gained 15 pounds in 3 months for no reason. My dr. found out that I have hypothyroid and low functioning adrenals. He put me on armor thyroid and cortisone to help the adrenals. Everything I know about cortisone is that it causes one to GAIN weight. I can not afford to gain anymore weight. Just wondering if anyone has taken both. I really need to lose the rest of my baby weight from nearly 2 years ago. All I can manage is to gain weight. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dana
Guest guest
Cortisone taken in large amounts is likely to cause wieght gain, but cortisone taken in physiological amounts to support adreanals should not. Bottom line is...it depends how much you are taking. (it sounds like you have a very smart doc...you just need to get up to speed on what he's doing and you will be in great shape in no time!) ~E:) --- dlynnsb dlynnsb@...> wrote: > Is anyone out there taking cortisone along with > armour thyroid? Guest guest
Hi Dana, I take Armour and I was taking 5 mg of Cortef each day for about 6 months. I did gain a little weight from it in my tummy and under my breasts, but now that I'm off it, the weight is going away. I have to admit - weight gain has been my biggest concern with all this, so I understand. However, I learned that if I didn't take the cortef to help my adrenals, I felt like crap (I tried to not take it because I didn't want to gain any weight). Now, I feel better - I stayed on the cortef for a while, am off it, and am doing much better. Try to look at it as a temporary thing, okay? Taking meds to help your adrenals should be a temporary thing - how long depends on the individual. Taking the med for your adrenals will help them to become stronger and then you'll eventually be able to wean off the med. And any weight you gain from it will go away too. ) dlynnsb wrote: Is anyone out there taking cortisone along with armour thyroid? I am concearned about my weight. Guest guest
Hi Dana, I've been on both Armour and Cortef now for 8 months. The key for me was learning not just about metabolism, but MY metabolism. Auto immune diseases can come in clusters. I also have Reeves Disease. I am amylose intolerant and also have Celiac. All these are related and were specifically responsible for my weight problems. I have fought my weight for YEARS and when I finally got a handle on losing the weight I was dx with Graves Disease. The other auto immunes were not dx until nearly 2 years after the fact. I gained and gained even before the cortef. For me, proper dx was sooo important. What has stopped my gain has been eliminated those foods in my diet which were high in amylose, and getting my celiac under control. You can check the validity of either one or both of these without alot of costly tests. Just abstain, and then after 30 days, re-introduce them to your diet. You will know IMMEDIATELY on the celiac, and if you are amylose intolerant you will gain again like crazy. Now all that remains is LOSING what I've gained. Getting the rapid weight gain halted was a key, but the rest is going to be just plain hard work, and finding out what will work. Now that I've rambled on and on...LOL!!! Yes cortisol can make some people gain a FEW pounds, but I think it's often used as a scapegoat. If you need the adrenal support, YOU NEED IT!!! Don't skimp there, or you won't be able to function well enough to exist, let alone exercise. I'm considering taking many of my files and starting a support group for weight loss for those challenged with auto immune diseases. It's just a germ at the moment, but if I can garner enough interest, it could become a full fledged board!!! Please email me if you have more questions... KFulbright@... Guest guest
dana, i was 110lb until i went hypo (hashi), i was up to 175lbs, i started armour in May 06, and then about 2 months or so i started HC, i have been on 20 mg a day with NO weight gain, i have actually lost several pd since i have been on it. if you are taking large doses, like you take when you sick and take Predinsone, you might gain weight, but you are only replacing what the adreanal glands should be producing. the most important thing right now is to get the glands treated and you will feel better, be able to exercise and the weight will come off. you should also be watching what you eat, i lost 25 pds just giving up sugar/sodas renee > > Is anyone out there taking cortisone along with armour thyroid? Guest guest
I googled Reeves Disease and could find absolutely NOTHING, not even a mention of anything called by this name. That's the first time that's ever happened to me in my searches. Is it actually called by this name, or could it be called, simply, Amylose Intolerance? I haven't tried that yet, but I'm just stymied that I can bring up NOTHING! Re: Adrenals and cortisone > Hi Dana, > I've been on both Armour and Cortef now for 8 months.
