August 5, 2007 - Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing Responding To Fatal

Crash

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois (USA) - A rescue helicopter made an emergency landing

early today while responding to an accident in Sugar Grove that left two

people dead.

Two men died in the car crash when a red Nissan going north on Dugan Road

near Road crashed into a tree at about 3 a.m., according to the Kane

County Sheriff's Office. Three men were in the car.

An Air Angels helicopter was assisting at the scene and went down after

catching fire. No one on the helicopter or the ground were injured, the

sheriff's

office reported.

Two of the men in the car were pronounced dead at the scene, WBBM radio

reported. A third was taken to Provena Mercy Center in Aurora.

Police said the scene was catastrophic and that tow truck drivers had to cut

the car in half to get it onto the truck, according to WBBM.

The helicopter was enroute to the scene about a half hour later to take the

surviving victim to the hospital when the helicopter had mechanical trouble

and then caught fire, the radio station reported. The helicopter landed

safetly in a vegetable garden near a fence, with all three occupants uninjured.

The fact that no one was injured in the helicopter landing was incredible,

Kane County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said, given that the area had high power

lines with two houses nearby and that numerous emergency vehicles were in

the road, according to WBBM.

" That pilot was able to land that helicopter without causing injury to

anyone anywhere and without damaging the helicopter, " he said.
