Guest guest
I love my doctor -- he's been my doctor since the day I was born, so I'd love to say he knows my body more than anyone. I am a little unsure and frustrated about something and confused. My last blood tests stated my TSH was 4.82 and my Free t4 was 12 (range 9-24). Anyway I don't feel normal but he says I'm absolutely normal. I'm tired, have dry brittle hair, been experiences heart palpatations...and he said it's all stress. So I dunno. Anyway, just a little vent there, but I do have a different kind of question...to anyone out there who has had a complete thyroidectomy. I had mine one year ago when I was 21...because the goiter was soo big it was pressing on my trachea really hard...it was actually making it smaller. Anyway, I do sometimes feel short of breath, post surgery, and was wondering could that just be because my tests really aren't normal and I'm hypo or could it be of some stress that big goiter had on the trachea? Even Synthroid themselves states T4 should be tested and be in the upper 1/2 of the range..so that for you would be 16.5 for a T4..although most people tend to feel better with a T4 in the upper 2/3 end of the range. so 19 or higher.. This is why you feel hypo, your body needs thyroid hormone to function. It does effect every function in your body. Now I do not want to dis your doc..but I would be asking your doc questions.. tell him where you want your T4, how you are feeling and ask him if it is wise to have a TSH over 1 with out having a thyroid for it to stimulate.. not all docs deal with hypo patients..and thyroidectomy tends to put you in another league of a hypo patient as most hypo patients do have some thyroid function. My mom's doc dropped the ball big time after she had RAI..but the right questions got them both on the same page.. and you need to ask your doc some serious questions and decide if the doc is going to work in your best interest..
